Today we go back and pick up a couple albums I missed…
Laika Come Home A remix album, but not a bad one. Very minimalist. Glad to hear not just another techno jaunt, still, just doesn't really hit my palette.
Kerplunk! Another of the early Green Day albums before they "sold out". Again, like 1039, it's a surprisingly good album! I went in expecting crap and really, the majority of it isn't.
Young Team I'm not sure how you could say you hated mogwai. At the same time, I'm not sure how you could pick favorite mogwai songs. They all seem similar to me. Not saying that's a bad thing, just that well… it's interesting. I guess on the whole I'm just sort of indifferent to them. The music's just sort of there for me. After listening more, I start to pick out things I do and don't like. I don't know, maybe as I listen more I'll have a better idea.
Nova Scotia Cousteau were one of those bands that I just sort of fell into. One of their tracks Last Good Day of the Year is commonly mislabelled as True Love Waits on download sites (like kazaa). So my mom suggested that I just search for the chorus, and lo and behold it was the name of the song! A superb band, the copy I have of this I downloaded from emusic and it's by Moreau which, was going to be the name Cousteau went with after its split from Davey Ray Moore. They decided to keep the Cousteau name though and produced an excellent record.
Pia (Live Version) Another eMusic exclusive, also from the brief period of name swappage. Didn't care for the track on the album, live version is really no better.
Ecstacy & Strawberry Wine I found someone on the Purdue hub who had almost all the MBV discography. Lacking a few of the first eps, but still. Not really the shoegazing sound from Loveless, but a beautiful record nonetheless. More like dream pop and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Actually, I really like this CD! A lot! Now, was there a compilation of these two called Ecstacy and Wine? As that's the name I downloaded these under, and it's the 7 song Ecstacy minialbum and the 3 song Strawberry Wine EP.
Glider From the first chords? of Don't Ask Why I'm hooked, such a quiet yet amazing song. I don't quite know what it is, but I've always loved that sort of effect. The second (and title) track is an oddly attractive bit of noise rock. More melodic than early sonic youth. An instrumental I can't really decide if I like it or not. Track 3, Off Your Face highlights nearly understandable vocals from Belinda Butcher, who has a beautiful voice, at least in the context where it doesn't need to be understood. The EP ends with Soon, a simply marvelous song, and notably the only MBV song I've heard in a public setting (Lost In Translation aside). Before the Low show, they had music playing, and let me tell you, there's nothing like standing in front of a speaker and hearing Soon blast out at you.
Peel Session 1988 Everyone loved John Peel, and everyone loved My Bloody Valentine, so what could be better than the marrying of the two? The songs are earlier MBV, not as good as the later stuff, and also this wasn't a real cd, it's a bootleg, so the quality isn't standard peel session fare, all in all not bad though.
Sunny Sundae EP I believe this is one of the EPs that Kevin Shields said not to waste your money on as they weren't that great. Granted, they are quite different from Loveless and Isn't Anything, but in its own right, this is still pretty good. More of an 80s/dream pop feel to it than direct shoegazer.
Tremolo EP A beautiful ep, surreal. Got a little busy during this one.
You Made Me Realise EP From the start it seems as if this might be my least favorite of the MBV EPs. Slow isn't a bad thing, just boring. The song You Made Me Realize itself is grating to me, though maybe I"m just spoiled from other lusher songs. Thorn gets me back on track though with the lo-fi sound that I know and love. Cigarettte in your Bed is a decent track as well. The EP ends with one of my other favorite MBV songs, Drive It All Over Me. This was the song that initially drew me to the band.
Substance Again, I'm not overly familiar with New Order, though I know a decent amount about them. I have Power Lies Corruption and enjoy it. If I recall this is one of the greatest hits collections. Pretty good, nice to work to. Has a nice beat and lovely synthesizers. All in all seems like a good collection. My computers getting sluggish, that means the end of this edition of RFD!
