Losing All Music

Last week, my iPod gave up its ghost to the Great God of Hard Drive Failure.

Today, my external hard drive (with about 6000 songs on it) also decided to express its dissatisfaction with the technological world and started making the dreaded Click of Death.

I'm going to try and rescue the data on the external drive, but for the time being, I have a very limited number of albums to listen to, since the vast majority of my cds and records are currently living in my parent's garage in Portland, OR.

AT LEAST I HAVE 2 DESTROYER ALBUMS AND 2 DO MAKE SAY THINK ALBUMS ON MY LAPTOP.

What The Heck Fest 2007

the nicest music festival in the world is happening again from july 19th-22nd in anacortes, washington state, evil empire. anacortes is halfway between vancouver, bc and seattle, wa and quite possibly halfway to heaven.

Boards of Canada vs. Of Montreal

Who will win the battle for most-listened in my last.fm charts? It's somewhat strange that I've been listening more to Of Montreal lately, as the weather has been rainy and grey and usually that's when I hit the BoC. Hmmm.

Or, perhaps, who deserves to win?

Do Make Say Think at Cargo

Sun 13 May – Do Make Say Think

I initially thought that £15 seemed a bit steep to see one band play for 2 hours. I saw DMST in Seattle in 2002 for something like $8 or $9 US, so paying the equivalent of $30 5 years later seemed financially akin to going to a Justin Timberlake show. Or somebody equally 'huge'.

However, I now realise the deep error in my judgement. This was easily the best show I've seen since moving to London, and probably in my top 10 of all time. Such an amazing group of musicians playing songs that I would go so far as to label 'transcendent' and I don't even BELIEVE in transcendence, folks. Plus there's the added bonus that they're really nice people. No dickhead rockstar vibe, just lots of smiles and genuinely kind words.

I wish there were more current bands making music as intricate, complex, beautiful, and FUN as Do Make Say Think. I certainly haven't heard any British equivalent – for instance, other 'post-rockish' bands such as Mogwai are great but not really on the same level. Open to suggestions if anybody has any...

gave up the ghost last night and deleted itself.

thus, i will be listening to "Du Og Meg" by of Montreal on repeat for the next few hours.

UPDATE:
maybe this isn't such a good idea.

Music Has The Right To Children

After over 7 years of listening to Music Has the Right to Children by Boards of Canada at least twice a week (and occasionally every day), it still evokes something in me that I can't quite explain. And somehow, it still sounds new and exciting. This album is timeless for me in a mysterious and very personal way.

Love it so deeply.

Bored almost to the point of tears, we left early. Which is too bad, because the album is so good. I hope he figures out a way to make the live performance a little more engaging.
