weird memories
1) Tidal - I have a very clear memory of my then-friend Vanessa picking up her Walkman on her way to bed (we all used to sleep with Walkman and earphones... ) and she declared this to be her choice of the night. It wasn't particularly new.
2) Purple - I wanted this for my birthday one year, and as it's my birthday next week, it's almost an even number of years ago (I can't remember how many). I begged my mom to take me to Target even though it was icy. She must have been really scared driving. I feel terrible for demanding that.
3)
Somebody That I Used To Know - I discovered Elliott Smith late. I think I knew a guy with the same name when I was 16 - he actually introduced me to Ani. When I was studying Shakespeare, I wrote a sonnet appropriating these song lyrics, but it didn't turn out well. Instead, the one that succeeded was about enduring the company of someone I couldn't wait to be rid of. Precisely on-theme. I wonder where she is...
4) Forever Blue - I tried to take art classes in college. Actually, I ended up with enough credits for an art major but didn't bother with the culminating project (I wasn't any good). In my studio classes, we listened to music while we worked. The professor has this album, along with 1200 Curfews (disc 1). A girl in class sometimes brought Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Volume 1.
5)
Descending - I loved the piano. Told my mom I needed to learn to play, and she introduced me to Elton John from my interest in this.
6) Brushfire Fairytales - Tobi listened to this over and over. Together, we liked Hard Candy, and I told her later it reminded me of her (she said it reminded her of me). I need to call her. And say what?
7) Style - This came on over XM on a station I had chosen as good for music I didn't know inside and out. Rob (what is his last name?) came over to tell me about Orbital. Later, in the same location, he and Erik dicussed tin tobacco.
8) The Whiskey Ain't Workin' - Duet With Marty Stuart - Karaoke, with Mandy. Can't remember whether we actually had a chance to sing this. Aaah, the Madison riverboat restaurant.
9)
Black River - The one and only time I've met Lila, she introduced me to Amos Lee. Then I found his CD at Target. Reminds me of home.
10)
Top of the World,
Standing - Discussing music with a certian bald Mike, who insists his Ipod helped him quit smoking, is always a weird memory. I love meeting Patty Griffin fans. I can't believe she isn't more popular, and I can't believe she's junked in with country.

Tony - This isn't so much a memory as it is an association. I read that someone had tagged this song as "homophobic", which is clearly not the case of the 'narrator' in the song. This makes me think of a guy I knew in high school (hopefully still living!!) named Ben. In fact, I think I knew 2 gay Bens in HS. This also makes me think of a particular moment in Scottsburg, when another redhead named Amy told everyone in our "Lil' Smoky" van she'd refused to go to an Elton John concert in her home state of Wyoming because it was a benefit for Matthew Shepard. How sad.
The New Pollution - This actually carries several memories. First, I remember where I was when I first listened to this album (at my brother's little league game). Also, my friend Jesse made a nasty joke about this song. I don't recall the details, thankfully. Finally, I once tried to date a musically-impaired guy who said he liked Beck. This one. Uh-oh.
