I still think that realism is effective as a describer of how international politics work (sadly). I don't think I've ever been a proponent of realism, but I've always recognized its place in academics, at least as a teaching mechanism. Marxism still has its place as well; for the industrial world in which we live, I think it would be a far better system for creating equality and alleviating poverty. The problem is that industrial civilization, which is the society that Marxism would be implemented under, is entirely unsustainable. At some point, not only will all of the "resources" be used up, but the natural world will be in most senses destroyed and the earth unable to support life. All the talk about industrial sustainability and green living is for the most part a sham; we can do things within the context of industrialism to slow down the destruction of the earth's ability to support life, but as long as we view technology as the harbinger of progress, we're doomed.
