Chant #2

It’s gonna be a wide great Xmas all over the World. Christmas. Maybe the most universally acclaimed holiday in the World, a global material superogatory orgy of consume. C’mon Earth! Dive into the party! It’s Christmas everywhere! Is it really the same in each little place of the globe? Let’s find it out together at Geek’s Radio! Tonight we’re gonna air a special trying to get Japan and Sweden point of view.

As for me I will deal with the Japanese department (of course!)

Nihonjin (Japanese people) have not a christian identity, if not when they get married. Christmas got known thanks to a sudden post-war televised Americanization and the former Emperor’s birthday, very to Jesus birth. (Do you think it’s odd? Did you knew that the Emperor is the direct descendant of Gods?). So. Let’s say that Christmas in there would be more related to St. Valentine than St. Nicholas for a western prospective. Winter and snow bring ing the images of lovers and their time under a warm roof. “Ai” and “Yuki”. “Love” and “Snow”. Two words that seems to get a perfect match on Japan.

These are the songs that I’ve selected for the show…

- “Chrstimas” by Judy and Mary. Judy and Mary had their hype on the second half of the ’90s. They started as a melodic punk duo. “Be Ambitious”, their first album - actually never pubblished by a label - became a legend. The band soon growed becoming a quarted and started selling a considerable amount of albums and EP in very little time. The voice of Yuki Isoya is frequently compared by the über-poupular Chara (They also appeared on a strage project called “Mean Machine”). When the band split she kept diggin her way to success with a brilliant solo career. I really love that little band. Not only because they’re kinda “The Toon version of Ramoens meets Puppet Cranes”. I came to listen to their song while I began to approach Japanese pop, also during Xmas, and there are memories lingering on…

- While “Christmas Jam” is a tiny surprise from a Trattoria Records compilation by a misterious artist called “Kaji” (I always wondered if Hideki Kaji is involved in it, but there’s a girl n vocals) “Ding-Dong” is a wormhearing pop song by a very popoular band called Tokio. It was a real hit on Japan in year 2002, just a year before the band became famous for starring on the popoular anime show “Kodomo no omocha” with the track “19 O’Clock News”.

- Venus Peter was one of the big name of the Trattoria Records indie scene. He’s still kicking nowadays. Its “X’mas with The 3-D Cartoon” appeared on the same compilation of “Christmas Jam” (”The Exotic Christmas”). The lysergic track its composed and recorded on a perfect Cornelius style, and it’s one of my favourite so far, expecially on the Beatlesque bridge.

- Tommy Heavenly6. “I Love XMas” is A must! Tommy it’s the fictional character born from another fictional one, when Tomoko Kawase, former singer of “The Brilliant Green”, started a first Synth-80’s Fashion-Nostalgia Oriented Chanteuse called Tommy February6, and a second dark and heavy incarnation born as a mock of Avril Lavigne called Tommy Heavenly6, rised from the death of the previous singer.

That’s what’s cool of Japan. Just when you think they came out with the World’s sickest stravaganza in the world the suddently throw you something geniously odd in the face. Just like one of their Crhistmas Cake once the snow has melt away.

It’s hard to be a gaijin on an Exhotic Christmas…

Here’s the songs we played…

Father Murphy - Ave Lucifer
Le man avec les lunettes - In all the Xmas trees
Parker Lewis and Friends - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Soda Fountain Rag - The christmas where it ends
Judy and Mary - Christmas
Tommy Heavenly6 - I love xmas
The Garlands - Christmas song
Venus Peter - X’mas with The 3-D Cartoon
Kaji - Christmas Jam
Tokio - ding-dong
Le Sport, Montt Mardié & Mr Suitcase - Last Christmas
