Syd Barrett was gorgeous! also love See Emily Play, Arnold lane, the Scarecrow and lots of other tracks-Saucerful of Secrets etc. The lyrics had a child-like quality, magical, innocense to them, which i loved-and still do. God bless Syd- shine on you crazy diamond!

Sobre mim

My favorite album of all time is "Exile On Main Street" by The Rolling Stones, followed closely by The Beatles' "Revolver".

1967 was the best year in music history.

I'm a big fan of Syd Barrett, the hottest man in London from 1967 till 1970.

David Gilmour, Pink Floyd guitarist and former high school friend of Syd: He was a truly magnetic personality. When he was very young, he was a figure in his home town. People would look at him in the street and say, "There's Syd Barrett," and he would be only 14 years old. In my opinion, his breakdown would have happened anyway. It was a deep-rooted thing. But I'll say the psychedelic experience might well have acted as a catalyst. Still, I just don't think he could deal with the vision of success and all the things that went with it.

My favorite picture of Syd

Syd Barrett: (on influence of fairy tales in his music) Fairy-tales are nice. I think a lot of it has to do with living in Cambridge, with nature and everything. It's so clean and I still drive back a lot. Maybe if I'd stayed at college, I would have become a teacher. Leaving school and suddenly being without that structure around you and nothing to relate to...maybe that's a part of it, too.

Syd with his first girlfriend from 1961 to 1964, Libby Gausden.

One of the booklets from "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"

Peter Jenner, Pink Floyd manager: Syd was really amazing though. I mean, his inventiveness was quite astounding. All those songs from that whole Pink Floyd phase were written in no more than six months. He just started and took it from there. His influences were very much The Stones, The Beatles, The Byrds and Love. The Stones were the prominent ones - he wore out his copy of 'Between the Buttons' very quickly. Love's album too. In fact, I was once trying to tell him about this Arthur Lee song I couldn't remember the title of, so I just hummed the main riff. Syd picked up his guitar and followed what I was humming chord-wise. The chord pattern he worked out he went on to use as the main riff for 'Interstellar Overdrive'. Syd was no guitar hero - never remotely in the class of Page or Clapton, say, (but) he had this technique that I found very pleasing.

Syd's lookin' cool.

The Pink Floyd's second appearance on 'Top of the Pops', July 6 1967

Peter Jenner, Pink Floyd manager: (On the Pink Floyd's 'Top of the Pops' appearances) "The first time Syd dressed up like a pop star. The second time he came on in his straightforward, fairly scruffy clothes, looking rather unshaven. The third time he came to the studio in his pop star clothes and then changed into complete rags for the actual TV spot."

David Bowie, 1990: "Barrett was a huge influence on me, absolutely. I thought Syd could do no wrong. I thought he was a massive talent. He was the first I has ever seen in the middle '60 who could decorate a stage. He has this strange mystical look to him, with painted black fingernails and his eyes fully made up. He was like some figure out of an indonesian play or something, and he wasn't altogether of this world."

29 Wetherby Mansions,
Earl’s Court Square, SW5 9BH

Syd lived in this London house from December 68 till June 1970 with his friend Duggie Fields. They agreed to take a flat in Earl’s Court. Syd invited his girlfriend Gayla Pinion to follow. This is the flat that features on the cover of ‘The Madcap Laughs’. Syd lived here through the majority of the recording of that album and all of ‘Barrett’.

Duggie Fields about Syd: "Sometimes he'd be completely jolly and then just snap - you could never tell what he was like. He could be fabulous. He was the sort of person who had amazing charm; if he wanted your attention, he'd get it. He was very bright. After he left the group he was very much aware of being a failure. It was quite difficult, coming to terms with that."

"He used to lie in bed every morning thinking: 'What do I do today ? Shall I get out of bed ? If I get out of bed, I can do this, and I can do that - or I can do that, or I could do that.' He had the world at his feet, all the possibilities, and he just couldn't choose. He had great problems committing himself to any action. As for committing himself to doing anything for any length of time - he was the kind of person who'd change in the middle. He'd set off, lose his motivation, and start questioning what he was doing - which might just be walking down the street."

Iggy "the Eskimo", one of Syd's girlfriends. The most iconic images of her appear on "The Madcap Laughs" album shoot, where she poses naked in the background.

Photographer Mick Rock remembers turning up at Barrett's house to take photographs for his solo album cover. At an interview in 1999 he said: "Syd was still in his underpants when he opened the door. He'd totally forgotten about the session and fell about laughing. Iggy the Eskimo was naked in the kitchen making coffee. She didn't mind either. They both laughed a lot and it was a magical session".

"Oh where are you now pussy willow that smiled on this leaf when I was alone you promised a stone from your heart"

As Prefab Sprout puts it in "Couldn't Bear To Be Special" (...Oh words are trains, for moving past what really has no name....) & Syd is a master at this. So what is (..pussy willow..)? Well it's neither a cat or a tree. More like a sprouting bud. To me it's the innocence of childhood, forever lost. A fashback of the light green sparkle of the spring of life. (...a stone from your heart...) The stone could be a boulder, but it would fit the concept better if it was a jewel. I'ts very beautifully put. You can read it either way.

"My head kissed the ground I was half the way down treading the sand"

Could it be the head kissing the ground in praise? I would say it's another metaphor for what Syd was & what he became. He was half the way down to the ocean of eternal poetry, but he was stranded. (make comparison to Opel here !). There's a line from an early lyric of It's Obvious that goes: (...stranded I'm wrapping my ears, when her lions ask why...). For more reference of being stranded, also from It's Obvious, (...stranded on the spikes, my blood...)

"please. Please lift a hand I'm only a person whose armbands beads on his hands hang tall"

The poet adresses himself directly: (...Please lift a hand...). He knows too well his arms (read; the creativity) are hanging limp, & he illustrates this with the beads hanging tall on his hands.

"won't you miss me wouldn't you miss me at all ?"

Self explanatory...

"The poppy birds weigh swing twigs coffee brands around brandish a wand with a feathery tong"

This doesn't make much sense to me. It's quite bizarre. I think it's a surreal image, that doesn't need to be explained. It's like a depiction of a dream, & Syd put it in the context not asking why. He was surely free to do so.

"My head kissed the ground..."

It's like the poppy birds bit could have been more coherent, Syd having full contact with his lost muse. Now only a strange throaty chirp of flashing colors & strange things swirling around.

"Please lift a hand I'm only a person with eskimo chain I tattooed my brain all away"

The "eskimo chain" being a chain of reactions leading to Syd's disintegration. (see last verse of Late Night for a reference) "eskimo" refers to the freezing atmoshere. The tattooes are images, like the poppy birds, that makes no sense. Obviuosly caused by LSD.

"won't you miss me wouldn't you miss me at all ?"

Yes I would...
