Alright. Last night finally got me excited about this year's American Idol, so I'll get right to the reviews.
Luke Menard singing Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Just a horrible choice of song, and his falsetto just wasn't up to the challenge. Bye, bye, Luke. You're not bad to look at, but I think you're going to end up in a Christian a capella group. Enjoy the ride while you can.
David Archuleta singing Another Day In Paradise - Yeah, I know the song was originally in the 80's, written and performed by Phil Collins, but David's version was definitely the 21st century version by Brandy and her brother Ray J. He did a good job with it, but I agree with Simon's assessment 100%. It was okay, but he's trying to go for those "things are bad…let's make them better" songs every week, and an American Idol has to have fun every once in a while. Next week should be interesting.
Danny Noriega singing Tainted Love - Unlike some other reviews I've read, I actually didn't mind this performance. Having said that, I don't think that it will be enough to carry him through. Having VoteForTheWorst.com probably will help keep him safe into the Top 12.
David Hernandez singing It's All Coming Back To Me Now - Turns out that there was a group that did record this song in 1989, so it gets into 80's week on a technicality (the big version by Celine Dion was in '96), but once again, David H. surprised folks by taking a big song and rising to the challenge. I heard Simon say something accidentally on mic about "stripped" when David was done singing, to make a joke about the current controversy. Classy move, Simon. Best vocal of the night to this point in the show.
Michael Johns singing Don't You (Forget About Me) - I know he's supposed to be a front-runner, but I just don't like the guy. And don't think that I didn't catch Randy's screwup, thinking that the song was by INXS and not Simple Minds, although I can't blame him for thinking Michael Hutchence, because that is exactly who Johns is channeling. The performance was better than last week's trainwreck, but he's not going to go too far in this competition with these mediocre performances. I think he's through to the Top 12, though.
David Cook singing Hello - Best performance of the night, and also most brilliant interpretation. I agree completely that David's version could not only be released today, but would be a hit. We have a dark horse!
Jason Castro singing Hallelujah - I wasn't as blown away with the performance, but it was a good, solid vocal. He's a lock for the Top 12, but probably goes away around #7 or so.
Chickeze Eze singing All The Woman I Need - Man, the producers sure let the contestants stretch on what could qualify as 80's. Even though Whitney Houston did the version most people know, Luther Vandross's version was in the 90's, and that's the version Chickeze performed. Okay, but weak. I think he's the other performer going home on Thursday.
So, to summarize, Davids Cook and Hernandez were the best last night, and Chickeze and Luke will be heading home on Thursday. Now, on to the ladies…
