Interview with Phobium, Norway

phobium

here another interview. now the hero is henning h. ottesen with his hard-style project phobium. he is living in oslo, norway.

if you're into heavy psytrance, chances are you've heard of phobium. having released only a couple of tracks, phobium's music is already making a big fuss among the followers of the underground hard psytrance. it's fresh, hard dark psy, although phobium doens't really like the term "because almost nothing is. just because there's no melodies and some noisy synths doesn't mean it's dark".

psylosophy: when you start to create music and djing?
Phobium: i first started making music at the age of 13. using pro-tracker on amiga, which is a 4 channel 8bit tracker. so as you understand it's quite limited but it was very fun, and sure got me started. after some time I moved on to pc and as time went by better and better software was developed and so did my music. i went through various genres, as most people do. at the time of 16 i got some airtime on national radio with some house music i made, and there were talk about releasing. but as in many cases there is alot of talk but no action… and for the dj-ing part. i remember i was 12 years old, connecting two cd-players on one input on my brothers amplifier to be able to play two tracks at the same time. not exactly the best idea I've had… at the age of 18 i bought a pair of cdj-100s and a djm-300s, after hanging out with various friends that had two 1210s, and i started playing a lot with those.

psylosophy: what genres have you tried except house before psy?
phobium: i did some goa-trance, electro, some techno and ambient. but i was young back then, so often i did a different genre for each tune. i didn't follow any "agenda". it was more experimenting to find my own sound and way to work.
