  • Glam Rock Memories

    Dez 24 2005, 20h19

I'd like to throw in a few thoughts here in my capacity as someone who can actually remember experiencing the Glam period from the early 70's at first hand. Incidentally, I live in the UK, so I can't speak for anywhere else.

To set the scene, this was long before satellite TV, videotape, pop videos, DVD's or the Internet. Cassette recorders were the ipods of the 70's, with tracks recorded from radio or records. Now it might seem obvious, but the most significant feature of Glam, was the VISUAL appearance of the artists. There was a lot of competition to "outdo" each other by wearing more and more outrageous costumes and make-up. Gradually platform boots, pink satin trousers, glitzy sequinned jackets and liberal sprinklings of glitter everywhere became (almost) normal. A watered-down version of this image even became fashionable (?) on the high street. I recall many mentions of injuries caused by platform soled shoes. I believe they were banned in my own school for that reason.

There weren't many opportunities to see the acts on TV, but the obvious exception was "Top Of The Pops" which was of course unmissable in those days. There were only 3 UK TV channels, and very, very few pop programmes. Another thing worth remembering:- colour television had only just began to catch on in a big way about this time. You just HAD to watch ToTP to see, in glorious technicolour, acts such as David Bowie, T. Rex, Gary Glitter, The Glitter Band, Elton John, Alvin Stardust, The Rubettes, Sweet, Roxy Music, Slade, Mott the Hoople, Suzi Quatro, MUD, Marmalade, Wizzard, hello, Shabby Tiger, etc. Incidentally, lest you forget, there were other artists of that era that crept into the Glam Rock category - lesser known (and quite diverse) bands like ABBA, Cockney Rebel, Queen, Barry Blue, Alice Cooper, David Essex, and even the Bay City Rollers.

I can vaguely recall ToTP having the odd show made up of virtually all of the above artists - yes, on ONE thirty minute programme. I wish the BBC could repeat these shows in their entirety. Unfortunately I've an awful feeling that most have been lost forever, as it was common practice in those days to 'recycle' old tapes in the interests of economy - an absolute disgrace.... the person responsible for that policy should have been shot, beheaded, debollificated, scolded most seriously and told not to do it again.

As has been well documented, it was probably about 1974 that the pop video made its first appearance on TV. Arguably ABBA can be attributed with the accolade of being first to get their foot in the door. In 1975 I recall seeing the first playing of Bohemian Rhapsody on ToTP with the famous graphics. But unless I'm mistaken, it wasn't a complete video in the true sense, it was just some normal studio footage interspersed with video clips. It was at this time that technical wizardry hit television, and no pop programme could be shot without swirling patterns and miscellaneous cringeworthy technical effects.

Incidentally, IMHO the first truly commercial Glam Rock single was probably T. Rex's "Ride A White Swan" late in 1970. Allegedly, Glam Rock was formally 'invented' when, (for a laugh), a make up artist placed a couple of stick-on stars below Marc Bolan's eyes just before he appeared with T.Rex on BBC's Top of The Pops to perform their next single, Hot Love, (February 1971). After a sluggish start, Glam reached the pinnacle in 1972 and began to decline in late 1973, just around the time that ABBA came to prominence.

Call it kitch, camp, OTT, crap, whatever, but it was never boring, and above all.... Glam Rock was FUN.

In due course I may rename it "my Northern Soul Top 200", but this would have the unfortunate side effect of screwing up its now firmly established Google ranking, (try "Northern Soul Top 100" it's seventh).
Regardless, I just love to load up all these tracks from my NS100 playlist into Foobar and let rip at ridonculous volume. Ahhh, happiness is . . . and . . . errrr . . . K.T.F . . .

  • The Funk Brothers - Motown's best-kept secret

    Out 2 2005, 17h03

The Funk Brothers (aka The Soul Brothers) should be given some kind of special accolade. In the sixties you could identify a Motown record at twenty paces just by the distinctive sound. What made that 'sound' so instantly recognisable? .... The Funk Brothers. These were the guys who created the 'Motown Sound'. Okay, so why did you never hear about them? .... because for many years they were never acknowledged as even existing!

    An excerpt from: ....

"The Funk Brothers were the brilliant but anonymous studio band responsible for the instrumental backing on countless Motown records from 1959 up to the company's move to Los Angeles in 1972. Woefully underappreciated as architects of the fabled "Motown sound," the individual musicians were rarely credited on the records that relied upon their performances, which downplayed their importance to the label. Motown's sophisticated, urbane brand of R&B certainly would have been difficult to achieve without the extensive jazz training that many of the Funk Brothers brought to the table. In order to keep that sound a distinctive brand name, Motown signed most of the group to exclusive, highly restrictive contracts during their tenure, although a few peripheral members were able to moonlight on sessions for other companies from time to time. In more recent years, the Funk Brothers' legacy has begun to receive proper attention ....."

    and from ...

The "Funk Brothers" were for many years Motown's best-kept secret. Everybody knew that instantly-recognisable sound, but no-one outside of the closed shop that was Motown, could put names to the instrumentalists. Who was that killer bass-player with licks to positively die for? Who shook that ever-present tambourine? Who's the funky cat, whose fluid guitar lines begin the immortal My Girl? Nobody knew. Finally, in the year 2002, the cat was let out of the bag, and the "Funks" were identified, and began to be accorded their long-overdue respect...."

To conclude, I've got a few of their backing tracks, basically instrumental versions of well-known Motown hits, and they're absolutely superb.!!!
