There's cool stuff you can do with playlists. For one thing, by creating feeder playlists you can make your regular playlist completely dynamic.

So, using the star system only, you could classify along the lines of

5-star: The best of the best.
4-star: Songs you love, but don't love quite so much. Or, great songs that you might get sick of with too much exposure.
3-star: Good songs by bands you like. Maybe the best songs by bands you're ambivalent about.
2-star: Ordinary album tracks of bands you like. Good songs from disliked bands
1-star. Weird stuff. Stuff you don't get yet, but might.

Then make a playlist consisting of (juggle the numbers according to taste):

All of the 5-star songs
300 4-star songs, selected by least recently played
50 4-star songs, selected by least often played
200 3-star songs, selected by least recently played
50 3-star songs, selected by least often played
100 2-star songs, selected by least recently played
25 1-star songs, selected by least recently played

When anything of 4 stars or less plays, it drops off the list. How quickly it returns depends on the star rating.

That's the simple version. At the moment, I'm using one Itunes for two ipods, with different playlists. My current star rating system is based on 5, 3 and 1 star ratings. Two and four star ratings go up for my wife and down for me, ie things she likes more than I do. In addition, certain genres won't play for one or the other of us at the lowest rating.

So, my default playlist consists of:

All 5-star songs
500 3 and 4 star songs, selected by least recently played.
200 1 and 2 star songs, selected by least recently played, but not including the genres Blues, Jazz, Soul, Indian, New Age, World, Country and Folk.
100 1-5 star songs, least often played, with the same genre exclusion as above.
100 3-5 star songs, leat often played.
10 songs of the genre comedy, least recently played.

My wife's defaulr playlist consists of:

All 4 and 5 star songs

100 1-star songs, selected by least recently played, but not including the genres Hip Hop/Rap or Alternative & Punk.
500 2 and 3 star songs, selected by least recently played.
50 1-5 star songs, least often played, not including the genres Hip Hop/Rap, Alternative & Punk or Comedy.
100 2-5 star songs, least recently played.
