The only DSO album I'd consider a "landmark" (and I use that term loosely) is Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice. Hell, I'd even say Funeral Mist used that album as a template for Salvation, and while both are greats in the orthodox style of black metal, neither were really magnificent or worthy of "landmark" status. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy DSO, but they are rather overhyped for what they are. I also agree about Lunar Aurora being overhyped, but I can't help but enjoy Of Stargates and Bloodstained Celestial Spheres, Elixir of Sorrow, and their split with Paysage d'Hiver. I've noticed that the French are a little too obsessed with the whole metaphysical take on satanism and whatnot (as the case with DSO, Bekhira etc). I suppose it's a matter of personal opinion, though. The Germans have an unhealthy obsession with atmosphere, which I tend to lean towards more. I will admit that France has a pretty outstanding scene, however.

Japs are only good for anime, and most of them can't even do that right. Also, you should know me well enough to know that I enjoy plenty of French bands, though I'm convinced Germany currently has one of the strongest black metal scenes around.
