As for new discoveries, I've taken a liking to Cosmic Atrophy. You should check them out, think Timeghoul but more straightforward and thrashy, a little like early Cynic. Very, very good stuff.

You will be able to hear it, you'd be surprised how close the synthesizers of modern music software come to the sound of a real metal band. I have a rendering of my first and now discontinued song uploaded, I hadn't quite figured out how to write for drums yet so excuse the crude drumming. What I'm trying to do (maybe it's a bit too apparent in that rushed song) is to derive most of a songs riffs from a single germ riff, something that's oddly never been done in death metal before - at least not to my knowledge. There's sorta-baroque augmentation of riffs in Crimson Massacre, Atrocity does similar things, but that's not really what I'm aiming for. So yeah, I have no idea if I'll succeed, but it sure is fun so far.

In other news, busy writing some metal under the guidance of a semi-successful composer at my local music school, this is part of the reason why I'm listening to so much metal these days - I'm looking for inspiration. The other reason would be Winter which has finally hit Austria in its full, snowy glory.

The libretto isn't that great in my humble opinion, certainly not on par with the Da Ponte librettos - even Mozart recognized this and made heavy cuts to the recitatives, the only thing that bugs me about Jacobs' way with the work is the wholly uncut (and thus inauthentic) performance edition he uses. Harnoncourt for example performed/recorded the work with Mozart's cuts but added an appendix with all the cut arias. The work flows better than way I reckon. Anyways, what's your favorite number from the piece so far? Mine would be No. 21, the Quartet which supposedly moved Mozart himself to tears when he performed it in private with friends and family. I had to analyze it in-depth for my Idomeneo presentation, it's such an usual piece - from the structure to the way it's crafted (subtle, almost unnoticeable polyphony and such) to the emotional content; the way it hovers between buffo-like parlando and heartbreaking sadness is utterly unique in Mozart's oeuvre.

haha, yes, i saw you listening to it and then i had to put it on again. it's so perfect in every way, so fluid and natural, controlled yet lyrical, dramatic yet never exaggerated. the slow movements on this disc blow my mind

it's shlomo mintz and yefim bronfman, it's a really dark dramatic performance with shitloads of attack, the second movement is as ferocious as anything i've heard. check your inbox for beethoven
