Over familiar for a good reason

Recent anniversary celebrations of the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Bob Marley & the Wailers' Exodus got me thinking about their relative influence.

I hadn't ever consciously listened to much by either artist, canonical stuff turns me off, but I think that globally, Bob's the one with greater reach. Listening to Exodus has been a strange experience because it all seemed very familiar.

I mean that in a good way. The songs have been in the air around me a lot, at some of the best times of my life. And though I can do the hipster-oh-yeh-this-again sneer, I like the album a lot. Getting global reach (everyone knows who Bob Marley is) with a message that boils down to "people be nice," would be hard to criticise even if the music didn't sound fresh after 25 years.

What it boils down to:
When I think of Bob Marley I get a warm comforting feeling inside; when I think of the Beatles I think of mansions.
