Thu 12 Nov – Motörhead, The Damned, Girlschool

Rainy Thursday night in Bristol for this extravaganza of reality rock'n'roll at the new and (un)improved Colston hall, but there were plenty of hot bodies in the venue to warm the old cockles...
Obligatory beer related comment: Yay, Gem on tap.
Spanner in the works: Nice, clean, shiny toilets - just nowhere near enough of them to cope with a few thousand well-oiled bladders. Sort it out!

Didn't get to the venue as early as planned so missed Girlschool - some else can write them up : )

Stuck at the bar when the Damned came on, heh, but it had been one of those days. Still, managed to peg it from the designer bar to the main hall in time for the rest of their set and was thoroughly impressed. I've always liked the Damed but for one reason or another, this is the first time i've seen them live and they deliver. From TocarStreet Of Dreams, to TocarNeat Neat Neat, to Curtain Call, it just kept getting better. Vanian is in excellent voice, aided and abetted by The Captain, Pinch (who I last saw in Janus Stark), Stu West and Monty on keys and while their punk roots are evident it's also clear that there is a lot more to this lot than New Rose as they rattle off classics with understated gothic elegance. We also get Eloise, History of the World pt 1, Under the Wheels, an MC5 cover (TocarLooking at You?) and Smash it Up pts 1&2 thrown in for good measure. The only complaint being that the set was too short, although i'm sure the band would be happy to have left a lot of people wanting more. Roll on their next headlining set...

No Bomber rig tonight, but no quarter given by the 'Head either. Vocals were bit muddy but it didn't detract from another hard hitting set that shamelessly plundered a 24-carat back catalogue of classics and which showed that, if anything, their songwriting has only improved over the years. Standouts: TocarIron Fist, TocarMetropolis, TocarKilled By Death, TocarGoing to Brazil, TocarIn the Name of Tragedy, a welcome return to the set for TocarBomber and the stunning TocarThe Thousand Names of God. It's as brute a display of power you are going to hear anywhere, and they have lost none of their enthusiasm. The foot only comes off the gas for TocarWhorehouse Blues but's it's firmly stomped down again for encore closers TocarAce Of Spades and TocarOverkill and band take their bows to a hail of feedback and heartfelt applause.
Back next year then, with maybe a new album...
