in response to what you said before...i will agree that there is some stuff, SUCH AS the hirst work that's caused so much controversy, that just isn't engaging or interesting enough to care about on anything other than a "heh, he went _there_" level. i think that there should definitely be a balance, but it is important to note that what may be interesting to you is not necessarily interesting to someone else (though that much is obvious) and therefore the balance the artist attempts to find may not even work to the extent he wants it to. one thing i do hate is when good visual artists ruin the mystique of their work by extrapolating the meanings of their works into a million different unrelated directions. if there's something that bothers me more than anything else in modern art, it's lack of a unified thought OR aesthetic among defined series in artists' bodies of work. we've had several artists come to my school and explain their shit and have me going "really?"

i enjoy discussing art, and agree that conceptual art is generally only engaging on the, well, conceptual (rather than experiential) level.

but yes, i agree with you, and i contend with the same general criticisms still in the modern day academic art environment to some extent, it's rather silly.q

i don't disagree that abstract art is "easy" in a very strict definition of the word...it does not take much honed skill, patience, or developed "talent" to do what he did, but as with most modern art, intent and process are as important if not more important than the final product in many cases.

Yes, thank you for reminding me. I may actually go about finally doing that today.

pollock, sam francis (whose 'flash point' i had as an avatar for a while; used acrylic primary colors on canvas a lot), terry winters, mark rothko...probably more, including some local artists.

yeah, the best thing for sure is lifting the paper off the plate you've inked and run through to see your image has changed in a good way! it's happened to me numerous times. i need to start doing oil on canvas abstract works though because i always like how my images look on the plate before i run them through and i feel like the texture is important (sometimes) to the aesthetic of the image, and monoprints are always 2-dimensional and flat...definitely going to be mixing various stuff into my paints when i get them (and the giant canvas my girlfriend bought me for christmas :P)

the Monument and Rust images are part of the same series, coincidentally! it's actually a final portfolio series for a printmaking class i'm taking. glad you like 'em! i am usually much more about photo collage and digital imaging because that's what i'm more "skilled" at, but lately i've been embracing a more "abstract expressionist" style of painting and inking. thanks though, glad you like em.

they all show up for me, lemme know what specifically doesn't show up and i'll host them on Photobucket which tends to be more reliable (and alternatively, more of a pain, but hey whatever)
