“Mir kam es vor, als sei ich eines Tages schlafen gegangen und 15 Jahre später aufgewacht”, wundert sich Brian Culbertson über den rasanten Verlauf seiner Karriere. Seit er 1994 mit seinem ersten Soloalbum “Long Night Out” ins Licht der Öffentlichkeit trat, nahm er neun weitere Alben auf, die ihn immer wieder in die oberen Regionen (und mehrfach auf Platz 1) der Billboard-Charts führten, und absolvierte Tausende von Konzerten. Nach einem besonders mitreißenden Festivalauftritt im März 2009 hatte Culbertson die Idee, seinen bisherigen Werdegang zu rekapitulieren. So entstand der aufregende Doppelpack “Live From The Inside”, der aus einer 98 Minuten langen DVD und einer CD mit zwölf Songs (von denen nicht weniger als zehn Nummer-1-Hits waren) besteht. Für die CD, die auch eine brandneue Nummer bietet, nahm er seine größten Erfolge mit seiner aktuellen Band noch einmal vollkommen neu auf. Die DVD wiederum zeigt Culbertson bei der Arbeit im Studio, zeichnet ein Bild vom Alltag der Band während ihrer Tourneen und stellt alle an den Aufnahmen beteiligten Musiker in Interviews vor.
Als Sohn des Jazztrompeters, Musiklehrers und Highschool-Bandleaders Jim Culbertson 1973 in der im Mittleren Westen gelegnenen Provinzstadt Decatur/Illinois geboren, lernte Brian schon früh diverse Instrumente spielen: als Achtjähriger begann er mit dem Piano, wechselte dann über das Schlagzeug zur Posaune, bis er mit zwölf Jahren auch noch Baß lernte. Musikalische Inspiration lieferten ihm vor allem Platten von Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich, den Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Tower Of Power und Earth, Wind & Fire. Auf seinem Debütalbum, das er mit 20 Jahren in seinem zum Heimstudio umfunktionierten Studentenzimmer größtenteils im Alleingang aufnahm, konnte er seine zahlreichen Talente dann gleich in vollem Umfang zur Geltung bringen.
Nichts anderes tut er nun auch auf der CD und DVD von “Live From The Inside”, die er mit den Musikern seiner bestens eingespielten Tourband aufnahm. Diese besteht aus Schlagzeuger Chris Miskel, Bassist Lamar Jones, dem Keyboarder und Sänger Eddie Miller, Gitarrist Wayne Bruce, Saxophonist und Sänger Marqueal Jordan, Trompeter Michael Stever sowie dem frühreren Earth Wind & Fire-Gitarristen und -Sänger Sheldon Reynolds. Verstärkt wurde diese energiegeladene Band unter anderem noch durch Freunde und prominente Gäste wie Gitarrist Ray Parker Jr., die Saxophonisten Dave Koz, Eric Marienthal, Michael Lington und Eric Darius sowie Brians Vater Jim Culbertson. Das Ergebnis ist eine hochklassige Session an der Schnittstelle zwischen Jazz, Funk, modernem und klassischem Rhythm’n’Blues. Zu den Highlights gehören dabei fraglos auch die Remakes der beiden Hits “Hollywood Swinging” (Kool & The Gang) und “Serpentine Fire” (Earth, Wind & Fire).

For the CD which also offers a brand-new number he took up his biggest results with his topical tapes once again completely anew. The DVD again shows Culbertson at the work in the studio, draws a picture of the everyday life the volume during her Tourneen and introduces all musicians involved in the admissions during interviews.

This passes of drummer Chri Miskel, bassist Lamar Jones, to the Keyboarder and singer Eddie Miller, guitarist Wayne Bruce, saxophonist and singer Marqueal Jordan, trumpet player Michael Stever as well as frühreren Earth wind & Fire guitarist and Fire singer Sheldon Reynolds. This dynamic tape, among the rest, still was strengthened by friends and prominent guests like guitarist Ray Parker Jr., the saxophonists Dave Koz, Eric Marienthal, Michael Lington and Eric Darius as well as Brians father Jim Culbertson. The result is a high-class session in the interface between jazz, radio, modern and classical Rhythm'n'Blues. Besides, the remakes of both hits "Hollywood Swinging" (Kool & The way) and "Serpentine Fire" (Earth, wind & Fire) also belong to the highlights undoubtedly.
