• Thoughts on Music Prejudice...

    Jun 30 2008, 0h41

As I pop some semi-rare Kanye West, I was reminded of something one of my friends once said when I showed them my last.fm...

"DUDE! Van Halen, Daft Punk, Stars AND Kanye West? Dude, those DON'T go together."

Well, I said, who am I to care if my music "goes together"? Why should I? I would get pretty damn bored of listening to the same song, the same artist, or even the same TYPE of music over and over. Yes, my tastes are varied, and I'm proud of that. I'm allowed to have a preference too, though. I love me all types of rock. But that doesn't stop me from appreciating some of who I consider the best rap lyricists around (Big L, Kanye and Brother Ali) The only music I really have NO taste in is country. But that's cool, I can appreciate someone who does. Different strokes, different folks.

If there's one thing that really ROTS me music wise, it's people like my friend. People who themselves are zealots of a particular genre, and have never bothered to expand their taste. You guys don't know what you're missing...

  • A Recap of Life + Analysis of Charts.

    Jun 7 2008, 15h46

I'm really happy with my life and my charts this week. Correlation? You be the judge. [face_thinking]

    Life

On Thursday I enjoyed myself on one of the highest notes I've had since coming back to Canada. I was invited by an old (girl)friend to a formal for her graduation of MUN. I thought, hey, why not, what can happen? Best case scenario, I'll have a great time. Worst case; free food! :p

Well, it all turned out for the best. I connected back with old friends I missed from back in the day, and had a great time with this girl. Things were shaky for me since coming back for a trial, and for the first time, I felt real tensions with my new girlfriend in Boston. The dance made me forget all about that. I could relate my experiences to three of my biggest movers this week, a-ha's TocarTake On Me, Weezer's TocarBuddy Holly and, going the other way (On the decline in listening.) The Killers' TocarRead My Mind. A great, surreal, romantic experience, punctuated by the joys of youth. It truly is wasted on the young. My highlight of the night came after my second slow dance. Me, being 6'6, I don't expect a lot of girls to always see eye to eye with me, in the literal sense, but I couldn't help feel I was seeing her look down towards my feet a lot. I tapped her and said: "Hey. Look at me, I can't see your eyes." She smiled and said: "Do you need to see my eyes?" "Yeah, they're too nice to be buried in your shoes. Although, I know they look great. ;\" She laughed and stretched up to peck me on the cheek. Why was this so important to me, you ask? Well, it made me think later: That was me some years ago. Shy as hell, and never took charge of anything. A reversal of fortunes, me being the confident one for a change, followed by a knowing smile and of course, a kiss, really made me feel good about myself, and contributed to me having a great night with her.

I don't know if I should, since I'm not sure if I'm through with the girl I spent many a happy night with in Boston, but I'll probably end up asking her out after I come back from the country . I certainly don't want to feel like I'm cheating, or having 'two irons in the fire'. But what's life without taking chances and risks?

    Music

This week was big for Weezer on my charts. Following the release of the Red Album, which I heard most of, and meh'd it, I still decided to dig up most of my old Weezer tracks for a listen. The previously mentioned Buddy Holly, TocarSurf Wax America and TocarMy Name Is Jonas being my favorites and thus, getting the most play time. I also grew attached to Bang Camaro through Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Great musical power anthems, they make. Old born anew. As a direct result of glorious last.fm radio, and me expanding my tastes into all the great indie bands I'd heard of but never tried (EX: Arcade Fire. Architecture in Helsinki and Mew) my AEP Score has seen a pleasant jump to 1.79.

Stars have also seen a recent resurgence, and The Police are on their way up too. I also hit 10 000 tracks at last. Wee, milestone! :p

More then ever, by the end of this week, I feel my charts reflect my musical tastes the best they ever have. Soft, indie and classical rock dominate as they always have, and a few brave rappers and pop artists make their points. My Overall Top 5 stands as the best reminder of this, with me voicing no complaints over the placement of either this week.

    1) Jack Johnson 742+
    2) Stars 676+
    3) The Killers 256+
    4) Bon Jovi 159+
    5) Feist 158+

    21. What's a good memory involving 27? (None, I chose 28, Great Big Sea)

This band means a lot to me from growing up in Newfoundland, they have done so much for our music and province. I'd say the best memory, out of many, was going up to a CJ (Canadian Jamboree) for Scouts when I was 14-15 and hosting a Newfoundland themed night, where we got to introduce some of their music to western Canadian kids who had never heard it before. They loved it!

Close between a few, but I pick D.A.N.C.E

TocarWhip It makes me kinda happy. :p

  • You Know What One of the World's Biggest Problems Music Wise Is?

    Fev 18 2008, 22h52

Subconsciously "turning yourself off" to music or snubbing it based on one or more of the following reasons.

    1) It's too mainstream. Everyone likes this artist, I want to be different.

    2) I don't like this artist, therefore, I don't like this song.

    3) This artist is supposed to be similar to my favorite artist. I don't want to be a "traitor" to my favorite artist, so I'm not listening to this guy.

I mean, really, I'm so guilty of these myself, especially #'s 1 and 3. Take my case of John Mayer. I had heard a lot of praise for him, and a lot of friends talking about him, but I made myself resistant to his music on the grounds that "Urgh, he's so over-popular, I'm not giving him a chance" and convinced myself he wasn't that good. Also, with Jack Johnson as maybe one of my all-time favorites, I did not want to listen to Mayer, convinced that either: A) Jack Johnson was far better then John Mayer B) If I listened to Mayer, that this would somehow make me like JJ "less" or put him out of my artists list.

What a load of crap I told myself. I finally manned up, and listened to some Mayer samples, and they are quite good! I haven't heard enough yet to rule on Mayer over Johnson or vice-versa, but at least I've opened my eyes and liked what I saw.

Please guys, I urge you, don't be like me. Don't limit your music taste foolishly! At least give all music a chance!
