07. t.A.T.u.

What was the first song you ever heard by #2 (Depeche Mode)?
Policy of Truth. I was driving to school, and it came on the radio and distracted me so much that I almost missed my exit. It's still one of my absolute favorites to this day.

What is your favorite album of #6 (Hooverphonic)?
"Blue Wonder Power Milk." Many people consider "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" to be their masterpiece, but I only really love the first half of that one. "BWPM," on the other hand, is great taken as a whole.

What is your favorite lyric of #9 (Bat For Lashes)?
The queens and the court jesters
Clapped, adored
Their hearts swelled to overdrive
And mercy soared
Mercy this and mercy that
Let justice prevail
But I just want my trophy back
It's not for sale!

What is your favorite song by #7 (t.A.T.u.)?
Что не хватает. Dystopian and gorgeous. Like that quote from that dumb new Mischa Barton movie they're in: "They're nihilists. Beautiful nihilists."

Is there a song of #1 (Goldfrapp) that makes you sad?
Black Cherry. It makes me remember certain things.

What is your favorite song by #8 (IAMX)?
Mercy. "So I celebrate your chemistry --- if you bond with me I can make your whole world sweet." That line clinched it for me.

What is your favorite song by #10 (Kosheen)?
Your Life. So creepy, and so good.

What is your favorite album by #8 (IAMX)?
"Kiss + Swallow." "The Alternative" may be more immediately accessible, but "K+S" is grimy and sleazy in the best possible way.

How did you get into #5 (Nine Inch Nails)?
I had been curious about them for a while, but I finally downloaded some tracks when "Year Zero" came out and was instantly hooked. I think it was "The Great Destroyer" that got me.

What is your favorite song by #9 (Bat For Lashes)?
The Wizard. The surreal, dreamlike quality of this song makes it unlike anything else in my collection. I tried not to cry when I saw them play it live, but I think I still did.

Who is your favorite band member of #1 (Goldfrapp)?
Alison. I love her attitude and the way she dresses, not to mention that incredible voice! I think she might be my answer to the question "If you could be someone else for one day, who would you choose?"

What is a good memory concerning #4 (Björk)?
Besides the obvious answer of seeing her live in Chicago during the Volta Tour, I'd have to go with the summer of 2002. I was fourteen years old and about to be a high school freshman, and I had decided to find as much of her back catalog as I possibly could that summer. Back then, the 4um was a great place to be, and I met many people during that time that continued to impact me years later.

Is there a song by #3 (Ladytron) that makes you sad?
Beauty*2. There's this tragic finality about it, like it's trying to describe something really terrible happening but never coming right out and saying what it is.

What is your favorite song of #1 (Goldfrapp)?
You Never Know. It's probably my favorite song from anyone, let alone them. It's Art Deco in musical form --- dark, decadent, and glamorous.

How did you become a fan of #7 (t.A.T.u.)?
I saw them in a music magazine I was reading in the car on the way home from school during my freshman year of high school. I was really struck by the picture of them and the fact they were from Russia (I used to be obsessed with Russia), but being a stupid little 14-year-old girl, I was too afraid to like a "lesbian band," which was what they were presented as back then. Curiosity finally won out, and I found some songs from "200 Po Vstrechnoy" after looking them up. Needless to say, I loved them.

Which of the 10 has influenced you the most?
I'd have to say Bjork because her work opened the door to a host of other artists I wouldn't have ever discovered without her (Mum, Leila, Plaid, Massive Attack/Tricky, ETC). However, I don't identify with her as much as I used to. I still love all her albums (apart from "Volta"), but her philosophy doesn't really fit with my own anymore.

Which artist makes you the most happy?
None of these artists are overtly "happy" or "upbeat," but I suppose Goldfrapp has the most songs that put me in a good mood.

Which artist makes you the most sad?
Bat For Lashes is probably the most melancholy.

Which artist makes the best dance music?
It's a three-way tie between Goldfrapp, Ladytron, and t.A.T.u.

Which artist have you liked the longest?
Bjork, since I was 12 years old.

Which artist have you liked the shortest?
IAMX, since I just discovered him last January.

Are there any artists you will still be listening to in 20 years?
I probably won't ever completely stop listening to any of them, since I have so many memories tied to their music.
