geez i was reading this book Why good people do shit ass thangs and it hit me that this is truly an i know i love to use the word immaculate group of artists wyclef and lauryn hill who are able to mix various pop culture references and twist it into a dynamic that is very real and one that is very motivating. "i wear my sunglasses at night" "too many mc's not enough mic's" were the two lines that really stuck out to me. they did covers from bob marley's stuff which they seem avid of. so now i am going to compile a list of the 5 most influential bands for me. this could easily change in a year but this is it right now and i will start the fugees at 5 just because im just starting to scratch their surface.
1. Green Day-I realize eventhough ive probably worn out my welcome with them, they were what i latched onto in my adolescene and they somehow connected with me unlike any other band. clever lyrics, reflections of myself, and the ability to mimic their singing and emotional style still puts them at the top for me.
2. Oasis-without a doubt i feel dejavu with them like eventhough they are from the uk and they make references to the UK, i connect so fluently with their music. deep, inspiring, dramatic, and insightful, they are unmatched in their ability to send a message of hope in an energetic and uncanny fashion.
3. Third Eye Blind-Hows it gonna be is one of my all time favs and this band has many startlingly similar attributes with Oasis in how they deliver their message. not much else to say except to take a listen
4. Minus the Bear-So I decided to throw them in. from my fav city in the world, incredibly fascinating they have childish track names with incredibly mesmorising sounds and find a way to move me everytime i hear them.
5. The Fugees/Lauryn Hill-im still mesmorized over how one band could've made my top 5 after listening to them for one day but they have. this is what hip hop is about. as much as i love tupac, tupac struggles to find himself through his contradictory songs of gangs and riches vs. love and giving back while the Fugees simply preach that they once battled those deamons, but at least Lauryn, the shining star of the group, knows how to be real and how to use her artistic talents to paint her picture of what is real to us listeners and for those willing to listen and understand, captivate our minds and inspire our hearts.
Honorable mentions: Story of the Year, Sade, 2Pac, Gin Blossoms, The Cars,Basia, Sublime
