My 2010 in music

Scrobbles

Artists - Number of scrobbles

1) Kamelot - 778 listens

Never thought this band could be my no.1; they aren't my favourite band, either a band that I play every day. BUT Poetry For The Poisoned was a great album that pulled my attention; the songs are way darker than the ones on Epica or Karma and have way more layers which makes it a very interesting album…and a lot of plays for them.

2) Iron Maiden - 722 listens

Iron Maiden is my alltime no.1 band and I listen regulary all their albums in a row. All periods have something special: the Paul Di'Anno period has a raw feel, during their first years with Bruce Dickinson they excelled in songwriting and the Blaze Bayley-time wasn't that bad either bar the Virtual XI-disaster. They tend to write more epics now, which isn't bad, but The Final Frontier wasn't that great either.

3) Airbourne - 626 listens

Airbourne are the sons from the guys in AC/DC: great rock'n'roll-feel, great riffs and albums that are a nice listen. Their second record was released this year and I discovered them through this one (what a shame, since their first Runnin' Wild is a modern day classic. Anyway, I listened these albums quite some times this year, making this my top "new" artist this year.

4) Savatage - 461 listens

Seeing Jon Oliva's Pain this year at ProgPower made me discovering Savatage. I already knew quite some songs from them from some best-off records, but never knew how beautiful their full records were. I got a new favourite band this year and it's Savatage.

5) Megadeth - 421 listens

Endgame was the highlight of 2009 and I listened it throughout 2010 next to Rust In Peace which I saw them performing live @ 013. I also dig their older albums but I gotta give them a good thorough listen in 2011.

6) Black Sabbath - 412 listens

Dio dying was one of the metal-lowpoints of the year. This guy made great albums: solo, with Rainbow, Elf and ofcourse with the mighty Black Sabbath. I picked these albums up again after his death, but also listened the ones with Ozzy a bit better.

7) Shadow Gallery - 397 listens

I saw Shadow Gallery at ProgPower and I started listening them some months before the festival. I discovered most of their CD's which are great listens. Progressive, but at the same time quite accessible.

8) Baroness - 390 listens

Their shows in Holland at the beginning of the year were the beginning of a year in which I started re-discovering metal. Both their albums are great listens, although I like Blue Record a bit better.

9) Týr - 336 listens

This band should've played Puntpop and I listened to them quite a lot. I looked forward to seeing them (or at least see a bit of them) but they cancelled the morning of their performance because of missed flights in NY. Next to Dio dying one of the metal-lowpoints of the year for me.

10) Masterplan - 331 listens

I looked forward to Time To Be King, again with Jorn. Before the release, I started rediscovering Mk II; I started liking album very much and when the new album was released, it was very hard to get into it. However, also the new record is quite interesting, but not as good as their three earlier albums.

Albums - Number of scrobbles

1) Airbourne - No Guts. No Glory. - 430 listens

Ideal album for waking up to, great record to drive long distances to and pure fun to listen to while doing other stuff.

2) Kamelot - Poetry For The Poisoned - 359 listens

Very deep, dark record from Kamelot. Has some very nice, beautifully arranged songs on it; my favourite? The Zodiac!

Blue Record got me back into metal, period.

4) Florence + the Machine - Lungs - 272 listens

Hold The Heathen Hammer High!

9) Megadeth - Endgame - 174 listens

My favourite album from 2009; expect my favourites from 2010 also in the list next year.

Yearlists

Top-10 recordings

1) Kvelertak - Kvelertak

Hands down best album of the year 2010. Killer riffs, killer melodies, killer songs.

2) Daan - Simple

I was always big fan of Daan and he won me over completely with Simple. This album stripped the songs down to their essence; and damn, those accoustic songs are great.

3) Star One - Victims of The Modern Age

Arjen Lucassen has always been one of my favourite songwriters. All his songs are arranged beautifully and he does it agan on Victims of The Modern Age. Best progressive record of the year…

4) Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape

…Closely followed by The Great Escape from Seventh Wonder. If I would have had the time to explore this record a bit further, this could've made my top-3. It doesn't amaze me like Mercy Falls, but hey, writing a follow-up to such a beautiful record could've resulted in a way worse result.

5) Airbourne - No Guts. No Glory.

Riffs, riffs, riffs; this album is filled with great guitar work but also great catchy songs.

6) Melechesh - The Epigenesis

Black metal in my top-10, what happened? Well, Melechesh released a stunning work with great melodies and great guitar work. The Epigenesis got praise from most music critics and I can only say: they're 100% right!

7) Florence + the Machine - Lungs

I just really like the songs on this album, they're poppy, though stay always interesting.

8) Sabaton - Coat Of Arms

Finally a Sabaton-album that I truly like after two records that are less interesting. Primo Victoria was one great album, on Coat Of Arms they do it again!

9) Kamelot - Poetry For The Poisoned

I listened this album a lot and it's truly wonderful. Though, it never has the spark to me to put it in my top-5.

10) Solefald - Norrøn Livskunst

A late discovery, so I'm not sure yet if they REALLY belong here. Although, it's a beautiful record and if I would've had more time to listen to it, I'm sure it would've come higher in my top-10.

Top-5 gigs

1) Meuris - Hangart, Kalmthout (28/11/2010)
2) Baroness - WATT, Rotterdam (01/02/2010)
3) Melechesh - Trix, Antwerpen (05/12/2010)
4) Oceans Of Sadness - ProgPower Europe, Baarlo (03/10/2010)
5) Kreator - Fortarock, Nijmegen (03/07/2010)

Top-3 most disappointing gigs

1) Manowar - 013, Tilburg (28/01/2010)
2) Megadeth - 013, Tilburg (07/06/2010)
3) Helloween - Trix, Antwerpen (02/12/2010)

See you next year, 1st of January :)
