Guess what kind of music I listen to regularly? Music that I like! Anyone that does otherwise is mentally retarded. Fuck genres, fuck labels, and fuck subcultures. If it appeals to me, I'm going to listen to it. Nothing pisses me off more than genre-humpers and genre-phobes. People that, if given the name of a band as a recommendation, will ask you what genre they are...and then decide whether they'll like them or not based on the genre alone. As if you know exactly what a band will sound like based on some bland, umbrella term that gets slapped onto them. And these genres are getting so fucking tedious and precise that pretty soon every goddamn band is going to have their own genre. Let's look at rock music, America's favorite victim of bastardization! Suppose you love progressive rock but hate punk rock and heavy metal, and your friend suggests to you a band that you really start to enjoy, only to find out that they're considered punk rock! Or heavy metal. Or both! You can't like them any more, no way they're not progressive! But suppose you hear a progressive metal band that sounds good to you......Would that count? Are you allowed to like that band? Suppose the band they suggest to you is a progressive punk-metal band with electronic influences!

At what point does all of this stuff just break down and become just a lot of stupid shit that somebody made up? They fucking made it up, folks! It's make-believe! Genres aren't a physical object, they aren't definite or absolute. I can tell you Blink 182 is fucking experimental jazz-rap and the only plausible way you can refute me is with some made-up bullshit genre definition. Genres are a nice way to categorize your music collection. That's all. Don't make it more than it has to be. People have to turn it into some sort of fucking competition, too, where whoever can rape a band the most of their individuality by slapping them into the most "accurate", generic genre is the musically superior person. It's bullshit and it's just a fucking stupid mentality that gives weak and unimportant people an unfounded sense of superiority.

What's my point here? Listen to whatever the hell kind of music you want and judge with your ears whether you like it or not. Don't get caught up in that genre shit; it can only limit the amount of music that you're exposed to. And even if you do listen to a bunch of shitty bands that you can't stand, you'll find other bands from unexpected places that you'd never have discovered if you allocated all of your time to one or two genres of music. I mean, shit, I listen to some of the most generic and mainstream "nu-metal" and "post-grunge" bands out there, but I don't hide it up and only listen to stuff that's considered to be part of a valid genre....because I ENJOY some of it. I know it's not good, but I'm not going to deprive myself of some cheap enjoyment if I've got the opportunity.

In the end, just do whatever the fuck you want to. Nobody honestly cares what you listen to either way, they just care about looking musically elite.
