    Yes, Sebald is an excellent writer, and Austerlitz is a masterpiece. I think you're right about experiencing new feelings while reading him. His way of viewing things is at once beautiful and sorrowful. And what a stylist.! Sentence by sentence and word by word, he has such great composition. My only complaint was that the novel didn't have a very strong ending, though I've pretty much forgiven that in light of all the other marvelous things in the book.

    Hey Mokami! I've heard of Gissing, specifically associated with the novel you mentioned, but I have never read New Grub Street, nor anything else by him. Perhaps I will check him out soon. I do have a couple of recommendations. I recently read The Recognitions by William Gaddis which is a long novel (950 pages) about a master artist who struggles with originality and therefore spends much of his life creating forgeries of the Dutch Masters. It's somewhat hard to describe because it's about a multitude of other things, as well, and it features a bunch of characters. Also, the narrator jumps around and changes styles frequently. It was a tough read, but rewarding and deeply satisfying. Perhaps even more highly, I would recommend the works of W.G. Sebald, though I'm guessing you know about him already. Fantastic German writer. If you have't read his novel Austerlitz, you should. It may be the best novel I've read in the past 2-3 years.

    You should start from The Trilogy: The Cloven Viscount - The Baron in the Trees - The Nonexistent Knight. And after this, the famous The Path to the Nest of Spiders...very sad, rich and beautiful :)
