Sat 26 Nov – Zappa Plays Zappa

I had been looking forward to this gig for a very, very long time. I was also told to expect good things from this evening and I wasn't at all disappointed. The standard of musicianship was amazing and 100 % loyal to the old Frank Zappa classics. The band began by playing 'The Gumbo Variations' from the 1970 'Hot Rats' album. This was followed by every song played in order from the entire 1974 album 'Apostrophe'. And, they didn't finish there !!! Amazingly, the band continued playing for a further two hours afterwards !!! Infact, pretty much ALL of my favourite Frank Zappa songs were covered from 'I'm The Slime' and '50/50' from 1973's 'Overnight Sensation' LP ; 'Inca Roads', 'Po'Jama People', 'San Ber'dino' and 'Andy' from 1975's 'One Size Fits All' album ; 'Cheepnis' and 'Echidna's Arf (Of You)' from the 1974 live album 'Roxy And Elsewhere' ; 'Dancin' Fool', 'Baby Snakes', and 'City Of Tiny Lights' from the brilliant 1979 'Sheik Yerbouti' LP, and many more. They did an encore and finally finished with 'The Muffin Man' from 1975's 'Bongo Fury' LP to a standing ovation from a packed out venue.

Some of the songs had good old Frank appearing from beyond the grave as he played his guitar solos on a giant screen with the rest of the band playing flawlessly and live around him. Dweezil would continue the guitar solos played by his father. And, the audience went wild. There was a positive and exciting feel to the whole evening as the band played to a packed out venue. And, the 'audience participation' segments were good fun when certain members of the audience were picked out to sing along and ad-lib to some of the songs. Dweezil Zappa and the rest of the band did the music of Frank Zappa absolute justice. I am very much hoping that they come back again next year. If they do, I will once again be amongst the crowd. Very recommended. Peace :)
