Pardon the belated response. So, from Loveless, give When You Sleep (pretty much sold me on MBV), Sometimes and Soon another go. I think listening to the album in its entirety can be a lot to take in if you're new to that style of music; Isn't Anything: You Never Should, Nothing Much to Lose, Several Girls Galore, Lose My Breath (the entire album, really); Ecstasy and Wine: You've Got Nothing, She Loves You No Less, Never Say Goodbye; Feed Me With Your Kiss: Emptiness Inside, Feed Me with Your Kiss; You Made Me Realise: Slow, You Made Me Realise; Glider: Don't Ask Why; misc.: Sugar, Bilinda Song, Map Ref 41N 93W (if you can find them). Sorry in advance if these recs. are too extensive, though their catalogue is just that, and I wanted to keep it relatively diverse.

Try delving into their (criminally underrated) pre-Loveless material and eventually you might take to Loveless -- or you may not, but in that case, it's no big deal, because MBV are not that one album. That constriction often comes from pseudo-fans hyping Loveless so they can appear like they know good music, but there is a not-so-fine line between genuinely appreciating and loving an album like Loveless and trying to appear a certain way by listening to the album/band. The band just may not be for you, but if you'd like suggestions before ruling them out, I'd be happy to offer them.

dunno - but i'd say maybe they just like being more a symbol than just a face of a band....kinda like what daft punk did with the robots - people find it alot easier worshipping a symbol than a person (batman taught me that!)
