I think that since you're a fan of Curtis Mayfield, you would be in a good position to appreciate the socially conscious soul of Marvin Gaye's 1971 masterpiece. In my opinion, it's the best thing that ever came out of Motown. The whole album just flows together so smoothly and beautifully, it's wonderfully cohesive and very poignant stuff. Along with Curtis Mayfield's Superfly, it's one of my top ten favorite albums. If you haven't heard it yet, then as one Curtis Mayfield fan to another, I say you owe it to yourself to check it out. These days you can get it for about $10, but I'm also willing to send it to you if you're interested.

Country? Well, let me see. Townes Van Zandt would be a good place to start, I think. A lyricist of the highest quality, who wrote the song "Pancho & Lefty" that has been covered by many more famous country musicians. Hank Williams Sr. is of course necessary listening, and you really can't go wrong with any of the performers associated with outlaw country-in particular, I'd recommend Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Waylon Jennings. Emmylou Harris and Loretta Lynn are very good, as well. Oh, and check out Lee Hazlewood, you might like him.
