Brownsville...

As a native or almost native, Brownsvillian or Brownsvillite, depending on who you ask, I have heard the same comments about the night life in Brownsville: "There's never anything to do," "Nobody ever comes to Brownsville," and other very similar comments. And up until this Wednesday February 10, 2010, I was one of the droning hordes repeating this fatalistic and sometimes self-fulfilling mantra. Unfortunately, after that night, I now know why there is nothing to do in Brownsville, and why no one ever come to Brownsville. The simple but not so exact answer to those two statements is that the people in Brownsville DON"T CARE.

This past Wednesday, Miss Nine, a good DJ from Amsterdam came down here to Brownsville to Club Vertigo. Yet the venue was nowhere near full capacity. And I asked around, "Why is the place so empty?" and I got a bunch of different responses from different people, but none of them made much sense.

By far the most popular reason was that "it's a Wednesday and people had to go work tomorrow." Now that sounds like a reasonable excuse. The problem with this excuse is that I have gone out on Wednesday nights and have seen different bars and clubs filled with people, the same very people that say, "Nothing ever happens in Brownsville," and "no one ever comes to Brownsville." Where were all those people? Something was happening in Brownsville, someone had come to Brownsville, yet those people were no where to be found.

Miss Nine was a very good DJ, I won't say she is my all time favorite, but she picked good jams and had the music flowing, you felt good all night long. People were dancing and having a good time. The music went from nice ambient pieces to more thumping sounds, all of which enveloped you in a comfortable blanket of sound. The night ended with the club owners turning off the lights and sound before she finished her set. And that would have been that if it wasn't for the heroic acts of a local DJ, (that as soon as I can confirm his name, I will insert it in). The owner turned the lights down and let Miss Nine finish her set.

Brownsville, even though I hate saying this, is not ready for a good nightlife. We disappoint whenever there is something somewhat interesting that goes on in this barren city. Our club owners disappoint by always thinking of the bottom line and always kicking everyone out at 2 a.m., using the law as an excuse, which isn't even a good excuse as the law doesn't state what they claim. I unfortunately am part of the problem, I wish I could say I wasn't, but I am. We live in a wasteland devoid of culture and we, the people are to blame.

MADKROPOTKIN signing off…

P.S. I for one would see Miss Nine again if she ever came down here, and I believe she will be down here, or rather on the Island for the start of "Semana Santa."
