BEST DISCOVERY[IES] THIS WEEK:

Bats - Listening to this now, and its like the best parts of Refused and The Blood Brothers paid up with meaty and intimidating hardcore chugging. The guitar battles sound like mariachi's in white vests dancing it out. Its that rare thing these days, a band that makes you stop what you're doing and listen (or tell others about!). Check it Metal/Punk or even Indie/Electro heads.

Altar of Plagues - An atmospheric BM band that have the most amazing tremolo-riffing (which is already the best thing ever) textures. The vocals are a cut above as well. And they are from the United Kingdom, well they're Irish, so they might feel differently about being united so we won't mention the troubles... Anyway Fen (check them out too) have a new partner in crime, watch your backs Agalloch, where's your new album huh? 2006 is a long time ago motherfuckers... Can't plug your guitars in when you're in the woods can you?

Claws - As you may be aware of, there is a massive resurgence of old skool, primitive death metal bands in the underfground. Its like the retro thrash fad and a major exponent of the sound is Razorback Records. This band is a new signing from them, and features their main-man Lasse from Hooded Menace, Vacant Coffin and a load more good bands. Its lo-fi Swedish style death metal from Finland that is atmospheric enough to make Euronymous scowl in disgust a little less (well he is actualy smiling an awful lot now anyway if you think about it.

blackened crust - Its the 80s. You like heavy metal (note, if you don't, fuck off!) and probably have long hair. You feel a crack on the back of your head and from the pool of glass and blood you stare up, dazed, at your assailant. He has a mohawk and is giving you the finger. Punx don't like metalheads.

Its the Zer0es. Two of the most violent forms of audio torture have combined. Crust Punk and Black Metal are bed fellows (and always have been Bathory fans). You get the political/anarchist pissed off aggression from punk, the misanthropic bile of satan from BM, mix them up in their common ingredients of awful production and raw as sushi riffs and voila the new sound of hell is here. Watch this space.
