about the DS shoutbox: it's cool you read Testimony, i think it tells one of the most fascinating stories out there. so how on earth would you hear something like that by playing a symphony backwards? not that i doubt it... i always wondered why DS joined the communist party at the end of his life. i don't think we'll ever know who he really supported, what he really believed. i believe his son said that the answer lies in his music, or that we should just listen and accept the fruits of his struggles and not dwell on the ideologies behind them. but that makes no sense. if music is a result of its surroundings, then what he created is great only because of the time he grew up in. i used to think if he had written his first symphony in a different time period (or just not in such turbulence) he would have gone on to create even GREATER works (things not influenced by stalin). then i told myself, it's already great, and it's great because of how and when it was written. i dunno man.
