Summer Case

Fri 13 Jul – Summercase

Got there way too early on the Friday so had some time before Bromheads Jacket. Never really listened to too much of their stuff before and was quite impressed. They had good energy and although their songs weren't amazing they weren't bad for an opening band.

Then dragged Nick to The Hidden Cameras rather than The Maccabees and they were pretty good too. I thought their songs got a bit samey but they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Which is nice.

Editors. Boring. Watched a few songs. They played them really well, but they had nothing else to offer.

So off to Guillemots instead. Maybe I was expecting too much having heard good things about them. They were good, but just not the really good I was hoping for. Made Up Lovesong #43 was magic.

At this point we got a text from Nick saying he was here so went and hunted in the crowd of Lily Allen for three songs. Alfie and Smile were pretty good, but her cover of Blondie's Heart of Glass was poor. Anyway, Nick turned out to be miles away so some time was wasted finding this out and then off for the band I came to Summer Case for.

The Flaming Lips were amazing. Their stage show is just so good. I danced away for however long, probably annoying the hell out of everyone around me. The only slight complaints I would have is that they didn't play anything pre-The Soft Bulletin which was a shame, but they played everything post-that that I wanted.

Arcade Fire. Not as big a fan as I probably should be. Loved their EP, but, yeah, not amazing. Impressed they brought an organ with them though.

The Pigeon Detectives. See Bromhead. Didn't know much, lots of energy, pretty impressed.

Bloc Party are boring. Saw some of their more famous songs, but dull so off to…

LCD Soundsystem. Nowhere near as tight as I'd have thought, but they were good to watch as the tent was packed and everyone was having a good time.

Finally found the Lundstens in time for 2manydjs who kept LCD's crowd spirit and added some better music. They were really good and although I was knackered by this point I was mightily impressed.

On the Saturday I got there just in time for the end of How I Became The Bomb who I'd checked out on myspace just before going and I really wanted to see. Saw Killing Machine which I really wanted to see and thought they were really good.

Badly Drawn Boy was really boring. Never been a fan.

James are also someone I've never really liked. Their famous few songs are ok, but nothing better so I watched a bit then went off with Steve to find some cheap (outside the festival) alcohol.

By the time we were back it was time for Jarvis Cocker. Disappointingly he didn't play a single Pulp song which was all I really went for as I love Pulp, but think his solo stuff is rather dire.

Having never been a fan of The Jesus & Mary Chain I was truly impressed. Every single song they played I thought was good. Probably the best band that I saw out of the ones I hadn't been into previously.

Sat outside The Gossip and listened instead of going in so can't comment on their stage presence. Not a huge fan and wasn't particularly impressed.

Air were really good though. Shame they were so chilled out when I wanted to get in the mood for Ratatat though. Maybe should have been on early/later, but they can't really, being such a big name.

I enjoyed Ratatat so much. Part of this might have been because I was exceeding wasted at this point, but I would have anyway. All their songs were amazing and they were easily the coolest on stage band I've seen in a long time. Will go and see them again sometime soon.

The Chemical Brothers started with Push the Button and had Hey Boy, Hey Girl soon after and everyone was going wild. However, they then started to drag things out too much and swarms of people were leaving. Were still worth seeing though.
