The one time I actually don't ignore iTunes update request, this shit happens. LOL. It just sucks for me since 80% of my scrobbles come from my iPod. It's all good tho.

Does Last.fm scrobble your iTunes plays? Since I updated my iTunes software, LFM doesn't recognize my library anymore.

LA is still a strong option for my move but if I go with NYC, it's most likely between the Bronx, parts of BK and North Jersey. Rents are super high! Ideally, I'd like Harlem but the prices, bro...Gentrification is a bitch, I'll just say that. You echoed my sentiments about corporate too. It's too draining for more reason than one. I also have some entrepreneurial things in the work hence why I need to be in either NYC or LA. I am determined to be a creative type that makes a living from my creations. I don't want to teach again myself but I'd love to be a mentor as well. You've finally been inducted into Paisley Park, I see! lol.

My move is slated for May. I'm really excited, man. To see this go from an idea to an actual event is motivating. Corporate definitely isn't for me. I learned that the hard way. What else have you thought about using your business degree for? I can see you being entrepreneurial. That's dope. Have you thought about teaching or coaching full-time?

Man, I feel you! I'm about to leave this current position in a matter of weeks. I can't wait to move and give writing a full-time shot. Are you interested in going back to the business world? And what do you do at the elementary school?

Exactly. It's not hard to seem lyrical these days. Are you still at the same job? I'm in the process of looking for a new one. I may start temping in the city first.

Definitely. Notice that it's a lot of rock critics that are singing their praises. I think the drought of "real" rappers is the reason why people go overboard w/ praising the likes of Kendrick and Cole even if they are good.

    Mês passado
  • jdotperiod

They are. Many seem very young and unexposed to a lot of the world. Well, based on when I saw him live almost three years ago, this described most of his crowd to a tee. LOL.

The convo w/ 'Pac at the end was unexpected but I'll admit, kinda dope. I dunno, I like the approach he used but I'm unsure if he truly pulled it off. As of now, the first four tracks, Momma and You Ain't Gotta Lie are the closest things to standouts for me. It's annoying how some of his young stans are attributing any criticism of the album to "not knowing real hip hop" or being unable to appreciate a cohesive album. Maybe it's just not that compelling to some....

    Mês passado
  • jdotperiod

Wow, your interest lasted longer than mine. Mines started to taper off after Institutionalized. I also like the jazz and funk influence and experimental approach but I don't know, it's just not that compelling as of the first few listens. LOL, I'm also for him making his white fanbase uncomfortable w/ the pro-black rhetoric. I'd laugh if they join alone in chanting the lyrics to Blacker the Berry at his concerts.

    Mês passado
  • jdotperiod

Bro, I'm surprised how far left he went w/ this one. It's pretty early in the game for a divergent album but he made one. I say he will either alienate the masses or open their minds. After two more listens since the morning, I will say that it may not be successful in it's goals. I caught myself drifting off during a large portion of it (especially on the second half). What do you make of the political commentary? I wasn't expecting a lot of the pro-black talk f/ him. In the wake of the Billboard interview, part of me wonders if it's damage control.

    Mês passado
  • jdotperiod

It does. I don't like every song but there's some genuine hits on there. I can see Jussie blowing up outside of the brand of the show. So, the new Kendrick leaked. I will say that it's very much a left-turn from GMKC. It will require repeated listens before I have an official verdict.

I'd imagine he felt some resentment. You ever get into New Edition? I have a couple of their albums in my vinyl collection but for the most part, never really explored their discography. They're very underrated in terms of impact IMO. I was JUST saying that NE is due for a biopic! I can't think of who could play who though. They'd probably need two set of actors to portray them as pre-teens and then as adults.

Bobby is the antecendant of Usher, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, etc, if you ask me. They all cite MJ (and in Trey's case, R. Kelly) but Bobby is the father of their entire style IMO. He was an incredible performer. It's sad that he became so inactive after marrying Whitney. She admitted that he was jealous of her but I think the media and industry fueled that. The Grammys were boring as hell. I see that I didn't miss a thing in the 14 years since I last watched.

    fevereiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

LOL. I completely agree w/ you. It rubs me the wrong way that so many of these reports put more emphasis on BK's fortune than her actual well-being. Do you notice that the mainstream media only focuses on her being Whitney's daughter? Bobby is hardly mentioned aside from being the decider of her fate. Bobby and her husband(?)'s relationship is strange considering that he supposedly always called her his little sister. It's Hollywood tho so anything goes, I guess. I feel for her b/c Whitney was all she had. All they had was each other. Add fame and fortune and you have even more of a struggle to grieve. Did you watch the Grammys?

    fevereiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

I felt the same way. I never cared about the Saboutkas like I did the Barksdale. That season was a chore to watch, honestly. Yooo! I said the same thing about the media's coverage of BK's hosptialization. We were supposed to mourn the Glee actor and Phillip Seymour Hoffman's overdose-related passings. They were tragic no doubt but why isn't that same level of tact and care used in covering non-white celeb's struggle w/ addiction? Supposedly there are unexplained bruises on BK's body as well as word of cleaned up blood on the scene: http://news.yahoo.com/concerns-over-bobbi-kristina-s-estate-emerge-as-police-investigate-possible-foul-play-224747831.html It's f/ TMZ so take it w/ a grain of salt. Poor BK was so lost. The people around here were along w/ the ride. I feel for you on so many levels, man.

    fevereiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

I def agree w/ you about season 4! It all came together. The storyline of the four boys was very relatable and so true to life. Did you ever see season 5? Along w/ s2, it was probably the weakest even if both seasons shit on nearly every other TV show's season still. S2 was good f/ a writing and production standpoint but I didn't like how it almost became a completely different show. The struggles of the Greek dockers was nowhere as compelling as the Barksdales' journey. BK's trajectory is hearbreaking. The inconsistencies in media reports is grating. What do you think of the suspicion of foul play? TBH, I think there's more to her mother's death than what's been reported but of course, I wasn't there.

Cutty was in a Jello commercial a few years ago. That forever changed my view of him. J/K. I didn't know you were a Wire fan too. I was obsessed with that show when it was on. I expect Kelela's debut to drop this year. This whole Bobbi Kristina ordeal is so tragic, man. And the region got its reward a day after winning the SB: a nasty blizzard. :)

    fevereiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

Kennan doesn't ruin the show so I can tolerate him but still, I think Jamie Hector (who appeared on the season 1 finale as a Jamaican dealer) or even Chad L. Coleman (Cutty f/ the Wire) would've been better in the role. I also think Shawn looks too older to be 50's son. IRL, they're less than a decade apart. LOL. I was going to see Kelela live in Dec. but she cancelled the tour at the last minute to focus on her official debut.

    fevereiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

LOL. I kept asking why there was so much Kennan. 50's egotistical ass just had to make himself a major character. I'm curious to see what happens to Ghost's standing w/ both Tasha and Tommy. It seems like Kennan tries to turn them against one another. Why Ghost/Jamie is so whipped toward Angela...I'll never know. You finally getting into Kelela?

I didn't know that BMJ films in ATL. The Game and many Tyler Perry programs tape there as well, right? I'll probably watch BMJ's first season on watchseries. If Shawn gets killed, shit is going to hit the fan. I wouldn't be surprised if Kennan gets caught in the crossfire, figuratively speaking. He underestimates Ghost but shouldn't IMO.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

How is BMJ? I was always curious. The way Angela is going about the case also says a lot about her character IMO. I don't think she'll stop messing w/ Jamie when she discovers he's Ghost but we'll see. LOL, a lot of people forget that Naturi and Adrienne Bailon first started out in 3LW since they've done so much on TV since. I even remember their Destiny's Child-esque breakup. The female assassin is ill! She was sloppy w/ the failed hit on Ghost tho. LOL. Kennan may dock her pay for that one! And why did she show her face?!

What other role did Omari play as a two-timer? A quick scan on IMDB reveals that I've only seen him in a bit part in Spike Lee's Miracle on St. Anna and on the short-lived TV crime drama True Blue. I can't stand the white boy's GF either! She runs her mouth too much and doesn't know her place. I swear she's an informant. If white boy is so street-smart, why does he spill the beans to a chick he just met??? That's one gap in the writing. Angela seems like a user IMO. I doubt she'd want to "rekindle the flame" if Jamie/Ghost weren't wealthy. You think she's cute? She looks a typical PR chick to me. Not ugly but nothing special either. Naturi, on the other hand?! I mean, her body....she's definitely grown f/ her 3LW days! I kept wondering why Jamie would dip out on all that for bland ass Angela. I agree, Jamie's demise is inevitable. Second 2 will be filmed in Miami FWIW.

I meant to tell you that I watched the entire first season of Power this past week. It's good! There were some holes and there --to be expected during a show's first season--but the writing was tight as was the cinematography. I don't like Jamie and Angela's relationship at all and think the white boy lieutenant could be a part of his downfall but we'll see. I'm also slowly giving into Empire. I enjoy it for the intentionally campy nighttime soap that it is. Taraji is definitely the star of the show.

I'll see him at the world-famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. I've been there for a tour before but never saw a show there. D at the Apollo is historical since he appeared on Amateur Night before he was signed. (He was booed off.) Control and Rhythm Nation are both classic if not grossly overplayed. I actually have of JJ's album from her debut to All For You. Gotta love the Jacksons! You starting to get into her?

I bet he was. You know they'll sell out in a matter of minutes, probably. I'm determined tho. LOL. The ticket prices aren't too bad either. It's funny, I thought about revisiting Janet Jackson's discography after finding a sealed copy of Damita Jo at a thrift shop recently.

George has appeared on a bunch of albums by artists who've sampled P-Funk or borrowed greatly from their appearance so it's a feasible idea IMO. How did they say Stevie was live? I may see D'Angelo live at the Apollo in a couple weeks if I can grab tix first thing Monday morning. Pray for me! lmao.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

I saw that! It seems like most of their later (1995 and on) releases were comps. It would be cool if George could get many of the living players together for one proper full-length. They're actually coming my way in the next few months. I may see them. It's been a minute since I've seen a legend live. I wanted to see Stevie a few months ago but his tix sold out swiftly.

Thanks! Well, actually a couple more steps but still too damn close. lol. I decided to cop an original pressing of Muddy Waters' Electric Mud and Isley Brothers' Brother, Brother, Brother (not very common) from the same seller instead. Dude tends to overcharge and I only had so much more to spend. I negotiated the price of those two titles as it was. I have a feeling I'll find the first couple Funkadelic albums, original pressings in good conditions, for much cheaper one of these days. LOL.

I like the '90s West Coast G-Funk vibe of Good Thangz, in particular. SMH @ Lupe wearing a Klan outfit in a forthcoming video. Dude seems desperate to get his name back out there. If his music were stronger, he wouldn't need to do all of this extra BS. So, my birthday is tomorrow. I plan on celebrating on the weekend. Musically, I brought a bunch of LPs at a record show this past weekend. I passed on a pristine second pressing of the first Funkadelic even tho at $20 it was a semi-steal.

Hami's pretty obscure. These two tracks give an idea of his vibe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtnBkO_ypkk and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eWPHAurtJY Lupe was blacklisted around the time Lasers dropped after spewing a bunch of anti-Obama vitrol. Namely calling him "the biggest terrorist". Atlantic, his label, cut all support hence why his profile has dropped dramatically in the last few years.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

Right! I'm so glad that I discovered them. Their sound is fairly unique but I'd say Portrait and Hami, another lost '90s hip hop/soul hybrid, are similar. I can always provide links since both acts' music is pretty obscure. I feel like before "neo soul" became a significant coinage in the later part of the decade, there were an abundance of black artists that went "against the grain" coming out in the '90s. yeah, man, most of these "conscious" cats are full of shit. I've heard stories about some. Few live what they preach. Lupe was blacklisted for a while. And probably still is. That could be where his current insanity is coming from. He always seemed "touched" to me tho. lol. LMAO! I actually like quite a few Chi-Town rappers. Common and Twista come to mind. I don't know, bruh, I just found Kanye to be a dumb Tom and Lupe to be a wannabe conscious cat. *shrugs*

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

The Pharcyde comparison is spot-on. To me, their sound was a cross between them and Heatwave. They actually opened for D'Angelo for his Brown Sugar tour. Wow, Kendrick and Young are related? That actually makes a lot of sense. I'm like you, I won't turn on him just yet musically but I also look at him somewhat differently. He's either not the brightest or desperate to not to ruffle his new middle American fanbase and checkwriter's feathers. Word, what exactly has he done? LOL. I've looked at Lupe sideways since day 1. Like Kanye, he was a rapper everyone loved except me. I always saw through them. So glad Cudi called out these black artists for coming across so condescendingly towards their own folks.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

You finally listened to Stepchild! What do you think? There's something so dope about selling a mixtape from a trunk of a car IMO. It just represents a true hustle. I'm in the air about Kendrick's comments. Part of me can see where he's coming from but then the more rational part of me just knows that he's not saying that "respecting ourselves" eliminates the systematic racism that keeps our school systems fucked, kids getting shot down in the streets and prevents us from earning a fair wage. He just can't possibly think that. I'm also hoping that he was misquoted. His first mistake was taking the white interviewer's bait w/ the Ferguson question. Some negroes become blind, deaf and dumb when they get a little money and a degree of white validation. I'm hoping Kendrick hasn't become one of them. And yeah, AB was spot-on. Speaking of Lupe, he jumped into the fracas between Kendrick and AB. LOL.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

They are. The success of Amazon and Netflix's original programming proves this. Our girl Issa Rae's come-up is further proof. The song the middle son sung on the show sounded like an outtake Tim cut for Justin Timberlake. LOL, it's still like that in NYC. Everybody and their momma has a mixtape. Cats still sell mixtapes out of their trunk in the Dirty? I saw that a lot when I lived in VA. I can even remember one brother selling his mixtape in the middle of the road somewhere in NoVA, outside of D.C., to passing drivers. I bet T.I. and KRIT's original mixtapes go for a good amount now. Did you hear about Kendrick's Ferguson comments and AB's response on Twitter?

Add the ever-popular Scandal and Black-ish and you've got additional proof that black shows can score big ratings for the networks. I'm reading a really insightful book about the TV industry and how aspiring writers can navigate it. I officially am more interesting in working in cable or on online platforms. It's more freedom, less politics and just overall better quality. Network TV is all about advertising. I think the other son, Jussie Smollett's character, is also an artist IRL. Timbaland, the show's musical director, composed a song for him that he sung on the premiere. LMAO, I bet! Do niggas try to sell their mixtapes on the street like they do up here? I swear, I got about 50-11 tapes that cats try to sell at the barbershops, street corners, bodegas, etc. Most are weak, admittedly.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

I just read that Empire and HTGAWM are both tied for the highest rated series premires of the season. That speaks for itself. "Black shows" don't sell, my ass. lol. Hip hop is completely mainstream now so I'm not surprised FOX developed a drama like Empire. I am pleasantly surprised that they allowed a mainly black cast. Of course, one of the main characters has a white wife but since the show is Shakespearean, it's probably trying to channel Othello. So, it gets a pass. lol. No problem, man. Your homie has promise. Is it overwhelming keeping up w/ all of the upcoming artists in the A? Y'all never lack for new acts, that's for sure. lol.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

Really? I'm glad. I'm always happy when a black series does well in the ratings. It paves the way for other vehicles. I also doubt it'll sustain those numbers but then again, we could be surprised. FOX did a lot of promo for the premiere. The song isn't bad. My mind isn't blown but it's cool. He's got a cool little flow. The instrumental was chill. Never heard of dude. Does he have a following in ATL?

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

I think the title Black-ish is two-fold. It's supposed to represent black assimilation while also doubling for black 'ish'. LOL. I actually have to catch up on the most recent episodes. I'm just happy that black TV is slowly returning to the airwaves.

    janeiro 2015
  • jdotperiod

Yeah! It reminded me of the dig Jay took at him years ago: "I'm about a dollar/what the fuck is 50 cent?". I can't say I disliked Empire per se. It just reinforced why I tend not to follow network dramas. I'm just more used to cable series where the stories are grittier and more complex. I will watch the new few episodes tho just to see how it turns out. Taraji set it off! I watched the pilot of Power last night. And predictably, I found the characters more believable and the plot more durable. I really liked it. I agree tho, both shows are very different. Empire is a nighttime soap while Power is a crime drama. Their only communicability is that they use the hip hop world as a backdrop.
