This wasn't directed at you personally, I'm sorry if it sounded that way. What I really meant is "coming from the heart" is a very subjective affair, and no basis of argument. You have a much wider knowledge of reggae and dub than I do, so I take your word for it that UB40 are actually all right, and I really liked their cover of "Come Back Darling". Will look out for Stepping Dub, but I'm not usually good at this.

My hunch is that Stepping Dub is a Bobby Ellis tune originally, but don't quote me on this. I see your point about music coming from the heart, no matter what sort, must be superior, it's just that I think, without a certain familiarity with a given style, there's no telling what is actually coming from the heart of the artist in question, so basically, without having heard The Upsetters and Al Green, you simply can't know that UB40 and Mick Hucknall are cheesy or not. This is what I think, but I'm open to debate.

i used to think it was the band: that they're as cheesy as they come. that is, until, thanks to the monthly mixtape group (check them out, they're cool), I came across their Come Back Darling, which, I suspect, had been done by Sherwood, or Jah Shaka, or someone of that school, because the production is mind-blowing. the rhythm and the vocals are still cheesy though:) I'll think twice about bashing such a "classic" (and all because of Speed 2:) as UB40's Red Red Wine in the future, but I still hold this true: I don't really know what irritates me more: a white American trying desperately to sound like Marley, given that he thinks this is the thing to do in a roots reggae band (Groundation), or British UB40, who seem to think that reggae is just another way of making Simply Red songs.
