With "original inspiration" I meant NW, of course. Thanks to Delahaye, Epica has finally got lots of guitar solos, and interesting ones :)

The new Amberian Dawn album is more guitar-oriented than NW ever was. There are lots of really nice guitar solos, even duels. The new Epica album is fantastic, they have a new lead guitarist (Isaac Delahaye, formerly God Dethroned) who provides much better guitar leads than Mark used to. The music is even more progressive and complex than on The Divine Conspiracy, but also darker and more aggressive. Epica have gone the opposite way of their original inspiration, sounding more like After Forever now, but even a step up.

I take it you haven't listened to Amberian Dawn's sophomore album yet? I recommend you to check it out, I've found it a clear improvement over their debut. They're a really tight and enjoyable live band, too, you can see that they are no noobs and master their instruments :)

Already with the headphones I've noticed a definite difference between Sami's and Marco's bass. Sami's tone is clean and smooth (Sami is a jazz and prog fan, might that be an influence?), while Marco's tone is "schnarrend/surrend" (buzzing or snarling?) and not nearly as pleasing to my ears. I've noticed the same with the bass on Operation: Mindcrime. On the other hand, the bass on the debut of The Iron Maidens is pleasing and unusually prominent, really easy to hear. I like it whenever I spot the bass - I've long been very bad at spotting it but my musical ear is improving, slowly but steadily. :)

Thank you for the tip. I have recently got PC speakers as a birthday present, and they offer remarkably good sound quality and include a powerful subwoofer. I used headphones before, they were good quality, too, only less convenient. I'll revisit Wishmaster over the holidays to examine if the bass is better audible. (I've been offered larger speakers by a fellow student that should offer even better quality but I wouldn't know where to place them, they wouldn't fit on my PC desk.) I could try another friend's stereo to compare, though :)

Programista?

Może masz go troszkę do wypożyczenia? :) Pzdr. :)) PS. Gdzie tam piękna...?! Przeciętne dziewcze ze mnie :)

Sobre mim

Now back to music.
First of all - music is an art and art perception is very subjective. Also coming from the assumption, that there is no universal truth (as I strongly claim), we can conclude, that there is no universal criteria to judge music, because particular music usually represents some life attitude, philosophy, ideas, taste, regional culture etc. and none of them is universal truth. Therefore claiming, that black metal is better than techno or rap is immature, as well as claiming, that classical music is better than extreme metal, because the first one has way longer tradition. First of all, I listen to what I listen, because I like it, secondly because I see some interesting values, the music represents.

What I like is determined by my taste, which I have put effort to develop for about 9 years now. There are three crucial keyphrases to describe my taste - dark mastery, bright mastery and nature. You see - it is no mystery, that what makes the humans and civilization develop is diversity. When it comes to art, culture and even society, we can distinguish two main categories of behavior. The first one is called the Dionysos'es way. It is dark, chaotic, instinct serving, spontaneous, wild. The opposing one, the Apollo's way, is naturally bright, ordered, instinct holding, steady, civilized. Unfortunately, as Friedrich Nietzsche pointed out back in XIX cent., the balance has been seriously disturbed in our civilization. We forget Dionysos... But at least in music, I listen to, I keep the balance. Dionysos'es dark mastery is honored in metal, especially in extreme metal, also in all metal, that is close to nature. Apollo's bright mastery is mostly classical music, with long tradition, development and very ordered and strict rules. The third keyword - 'nature' is my preference of music that is close to nature (e.g. folk) over unnatural one (e.g. electronic). Secondary thing is that I strongly prefer music, that is more or less away from reality over music, that contains simple every day's life themes. The fact, that themes are somehow away from reality, doesn't mean, that one can't learn about reality. Just a little bit more intellectual effort is needed.

I've said above, that the art can't be judged, but industry surely can be. Many people like to make industry out of music. I personally find it wrong, so music, that is art, is always higher than music industry in my classification.

Being open-minded is important. But having own taste is equally important. Being open-minded doesn't mean liking everything. Liking everything means having no taste. So, I think, the crucial thing is to concentrate on improving own taste, developing it into branches and not to throw away opportunities to get to know something new, because of some stupid prejudices.
