I found a Village Voice article about him where they describe his solos as "warmly insistent" and I thought that's about the best way to put it. I feel like if he could have stuck around, he would have been the bridge between the East and West Coast schools of the time. He's not afraid of being pretty or difficult, or to try and be both at once. Mostly he just goes with the same unwearied joy that seems to drive all the best parts of a Kerouac novel. It's almost impossible to listen to these live performances always ending with him and Dexter Gordon and not be absolutely thrilled and exhausted by it.
