well no, not really :). it's origins is a violone - a smaller form of a large viola. violoncello=small violone. It has similarities with viola da gamba (there's nothing called violino da gamba :D), but gambas have frets, more strings (which are not tuned the same way as on a cello) and a different instrument shape. shall i go on...maybe not, haha. Have a nice weekend :)!

Thank you! Really? So anything post-Classical era is 'modern' to you, I suppose? I'm inclined to agree - I hardly even consider music after Stravinsky any more :)

Excuse my ignorance, but I wasn't even aware that viols existed today! :P However, I will try my best to win back the page for the Baroque fans. Baroque music should never by beaten by metal...never, ever.

Hi neighbour, thank you for you shout about the group EX CATHDRA. You're absolutely right: they are excellent I just discovered them on the website of the HYPERION LABEL and was also fascinated by the Ibero-American indigenous song you mentioned. Nice to see that somebody else is trying to spread the word . Kind regards

F. sylvestris is usually found in its native habitat, the American South. Although not a strong swimmer, it has been known to cross the Atlantic. It is considered harmless to humans, but a ravenous bibliovore.

Some current favorites
Musicians: Toumani Diabaté, Fretwork, Los Otros, Phantasm, Vieux Farka Touré, Les Voix Humaines, and my college classmates the Indigo Girls.
Composers: Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach, Orlando Gibbons, Marin Marais, Diego Ortiz, Domenico Scarlatti.

The group I lead: Viola da Gamba
