Don't disturb me now
I can see the why, the when and how
Looking back to see all bridges burn
I have reached the point of no return

Overrated Spotlight:
Metallica - Death Magnetic

This album is by no means a real "return to roots". It's a true dissapointment for those of us who wanted something to reflect the same attitude Metallica had in the 80's. Of course, it's always farfetch'd when we expect something like that from such a band. It's nearly impossible to catch the same winds of creation that led to albums like Master of Puppets. Instead, what we find are a plethora of songs attempting to be something more than they really are. Metallica successfully recycle old tricks and try them in new situations (not very exciting ones may I add). For instance, we hear James attempt to recapture his 80's grit. We hear Kirk unleash the pentatonic fret fury (and instead creating a riff raff, or a barrage of ass if you will). We hear Lars being a complete idiot once again (no surprise). I won't even comment on Rob because nothing interesting was heard in the low end registers. What do we get as a final product though? Something Metallica praised before it came out - a record that delivers to all those who rejoiced at the thought of new Metallica material. But my issue with this album is not how it does not compare to older Metallica. It is simply the fact that this album gets way too much praise and suffers from such basic problems. There's an overal lack of cohesiveness, as seen in the "instrumental" and on Unforgiven III (a true stain on the Unforgiven trilogy), and the songs lack the creative edge. In fact, most of the songs lack general well-thought out structure. They're way too long and it's simply unnecessary. The last thing we need is Metallica fanboys heralding this as the new saviour of Metal. We had this with The Crusade, and all that showed was how people can be so easily attached to the past. Death Magnetic gives absolutely nothing new to the world of music. That's that. It's not particularly fun, but it is Metallica. I will just say this in the end though: this album is not of the highest quality music-wise, nor production-wise. I'd listen to something else any day of the week than listen to Death Magnetic. By no means worse than St. Anger, but that is honestly a stupid "landmark" for people to compare this too. Let the fanboys rejoice. I am much better off listening to something more innovative.
