Mary Trembles, Violent Flames, The Quills
February 28, 2009
For a band that has just turned over three-quarters of its personnel, local noise-act Mary Trembles is remarkably tight tonight at The Globe. The new drummer is nowhere near as charismatic as the wonderfully expressive Damon Cox (a high bar if ever there was one), but the new bassist, Joel, makes up for it. And his untidy white-shirt-and-black-tie look complements the ever-dapper Skritch.
The trio rapidly churn through a selection that covers the majority of debut LP Borrowed Ears, Borrowed Eyes and their EP ps…Situation. As the set progresses I'm struck by how much the full-length release has grown on me over the last 10 months since I first heard it. I wasn't convinced at first, but now tracks such as Geranium seem to have acquired additional growl and bite. 'tis lovely.
Support act Violent Flames seems to find it hard going, and progressively lose punters to the bar, but The Quills maintain audience interest throughout despite the sometimes-iffy pitch of the lead vocalist.
In other news, I have a lovely new home for (some of) my photos. Check out LifeMusicMedia in all it's easy-to-navigate 800x533 glory.
