This year was plaged with different sounds, and lots of amazing surprises for me.
Some artist left the list, some others stayed and of course some others joined. In 2010 there were a lot of lousy music releases, I couldn't believe the amount of crap that was being released over '10 house here, techno there, electronic breakdowns in songs everywhere it was insane. Now I'm not gonna lie there were a couple good singles that had those characteristics but in general it was crap.
So I had to do two things:
1. Turn to my roots.
2. Take new directions.
And I don't regret this at all, despite the fact that I love pop music I also love other genders and this year those other genders took over. From the experimental likes of my new god iamamiwhoami to the sugar coated talent of Ellie Goulding this year was full of positivity, negativity, reality and dreamlands.
So let's start,
10. The Pretty Reckless
I had been listening to the little demos on 09 but nothing prepared me for the boom they would have on my list with the single "Blender" early january of this year. They reminded me how much I adore guitar riffs and female fronted bands with an attitude. Of course criticism would come their way specialy to their singer "Taylor Momsen" for going from itsy bitsy to rock chick in literaly a heartbeat, but it seems that people forget the most important thing she is indeed an amazing singer. If you listen to the early demos and live performances you'll realize she has an incredible rock voice, forget "Gossip Girl" and "The Grinch" this girl is so much more than that and this band is so much better than most people think. Now fans had to wait a hell long to get the EP and the Semi-full lenght. But it was really worth it, every single song is an ode to new wave rock and for that I salute them.
9. Glee Cast
I wasn't too surprised when I saw my list and realized that Glee was still on the top 10 even when a whole year went by, and that's because they keep on releasing a fabulous track after another. I was so glad to see all the new covers. Madonna, Lady Gaga and other famous musicals. But the highlight came when they released "The rocky horror glee show", in a few words...incredible. Glee became so much more than just a show, it became a fascination.
8. Limp Wrist
This Hardcore band was the one that I least thought I was going to get so into. I was introduced by real hardcore through my best friend but little did we know about the gender Homocore. Limp Wrist is one of the biggest exponents of this gender that has bad ass guitars and gay-themed lyrics; some of them are really hysterical and some of them talk real truths. The over all rawness of this band got me weak at my knees. With songs like "Limp wrist Vrs. Dr. Laura", "Angry Queens", "Cheap Art" and the famous "I love hardcore boys, I love boys hardcore" quickly made them one of my new favorite bands ever. I can't wait to hear more from them. These guys are my ultimate gay idols.
7. Ellie Goulding
Now taking a completely different turn we have indie sensation Ellie Goulding. (Indie as she's in an independent record label, I know how over sensitive people get over that word) Now she entered my list on late 09 but it wasn't until 10 that she had her piece of my heart. "Lights" is an amazing album full with amazing atmospheres and electronic pieces. Despite having electronic elements this artist manages to take them into a tasteful level to create real symphonies. Besides it doesn't hurt that she's super stunning. Ellie Goulding with that little squeeky cute voice of hers is the revelation of this year and I expect great things for her in 11. Cheers for her!
After a HUGE break, finaly all hole fans were treated with a new album "Nobody's Daughter". We had been teased before with a Courtney love album that had the same name that ended up being a compilation of stolen demos. I have to say "Nobody's daughter" is definitely not the best of their works (not saying it's bad, it's actualy quite good) in fact it is not due to that album that they made it into the list. It was because of their previous works that they actualy shone through. "Pretty on the inside", "Celebrity Skin" and their other works were the ones that took them this far. Nothing can replace the Hole classics. The heartbreaking lyrics of all their albums, the impressive vocals of Courtney Love and the stunning rythms are the ones that makes hole one of my ultimate favorite bands EVER.
Another artist that made fans wait a humongous amount of time to get a new material, but I have to tell you...it was SO WORTH IT. MAYA is a masterpiece of whatever gender M.I.A is in. Every single song of that album is perfection that never stops to amaze me. Everytime I listen to songs from the album I find another little detail that makes my jaw drop in amazement. Now M.I.A has been on my library since early 2000's but nothing prepared me for MAYA it has rough techno beats combined with her wonderful rapping/singing with lyrics that actualy make you think. Most people will have her in their lists for "Paper Planes" which is a great song, but they don't realize the broad unbelievable music she has. M.I.A I am really glad you made it into my list this year.
I thought robyn would be higher to be honest. But still I think number 4 is fair good enough. I first heard of her with "who's that girl" then moved to a newer material "Robyn" but the best moment of robyn was when she released "Body Talk". All three of the body talks are beyond pop perfection. She is the only reason why pop didn't suck this year. It was an amazing release after the other leaving all the fans and new fans breathless. She worked her ass off this year and I'm glad she did because she left all of her fans with a really nice after taste. I can't even begin to describe how much her songs have helped me through this year, from good to bad moments robyn has been there, and i couldn't thank her enough.
3. Lady Gaga
Now this is something I actualy didn't expect. I thought I didn't listen to Lady Gaga that much this year ( at least not that much on the last 6 months). Guess I was wrong. I won't say too much about her coz everything has been said already. She is overall amazing. The fashion, art, and thought that goes into every single detail in her career is such an inspiration and i will continue to listen to her I think for the rest of my life haha.
2. Le Butcherettes
They were a real finding this year. I was flipping through some channels, someone knocked on the door and when I came back this female fronted band were about to play a song. First thing that caught my attention was the blood stained apron she was wearing and the mask of the drummer. How could I know that they would become my ultimate favorite band of this year. The song "Henry Don't got love" became an anthem in my life, but that was just the tip of the iceberg all the songs from the "Kiss & kill EP" are unbelievable. I can honestly say "Feminism Politics" changed my life.
I had the luck to interview Tery Gender Bender (Lead singer) for my online fashion magazine (www.nonmagazine.tk) and I got to tell you she has got to be one of the smartest/down to earth people I've ever talked to in my entire life.
I could go on and on about how much they have changed my life but I'll just leave it like that haha. I am dying to get "Sin sin sin" their new material (is being released next year) and I can just tell it is going to ensure them a spot on next years list. This years' heart goes to Le butcherettes ♥ for changing my life with their music.
No surprise since I have been listening to this project since late 09 non stop. No joke, I have to listen to iamamiwhoami's songs at least once every day. I can't stand not listening to them. The beautiful work of this artist goes beyond labels and genders. I can't even get around on how incredibly amazing this whole project is, simply because is not only about the music, it's about creating a paralel world from ours.
Jonna Lee and her team managed to create a whole new world full of dream-like scenarios, angelic vocals, electronic heavenly beats and videos that should be considered to be on display for future generations to know and appretiate REAL art from our era.
This artist managed to top every other artist that has been on my list EVER. She is #1 on my overall list, I don't even know how I managed to listen to her songs that many times. She toped my #1 overall artist that has been gathering plays since 2001 in only one year. I think that can pretty much summ how much I love her.
All the songs are pure magic. I almost die when in her youtube she announced a live performance. I couldn't believe this, I would be able to see her play live even if it was only in the internet. The journey to this live concert was incredible then to see her play live for all of us it is beyond descriptions. Somehow they made the songs I already knew by heart different and made me enjoy them in a different way.
Now the future of this project is uncertain since the only contact we have with the artist is through the videos and music they release. I really REALLY hope they never ever ever stop making music.
I can't thank iamamiwhoami enough on how really they have made this musical journey so unbelievable, I've met so many people through this project, discovered so many new artists and opened my eyes so much more into the real beauty and ugly of this world. iamabetterperson thanks to this project.
So, that is it for this years' top ten. However these musicians, bands, singers, didn't make it to my top 10 BUT I think I have to mention them because they have a special place in my heart for beig there for me on 10
