Back in 2009 the Oakland based dance-pop sensation Wallpaper brought us the “Doo-Doo Face” [n. Facial expression made when listening to something EXTREMELY funky].
Now front man Eric Frederic (aka Ricky Reed) is back with a whole new face and a totally revamped sound, ready to take on the jaded and redundant world that is contemporary pop music with an ironic in-your-face attitude. Follow through for the music video and a free Mp3 of the mind-blowing satirical slam that is “Stupidfacedd”
First and foremost, let’s re-introduce Wallpaper: Born out of the ashes of other Bay Area bands such as Facing New York, primarily steered by singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Eric Frederic who is often times joined by drummer buddy Arjun Singh (www.thearjungsingh.com). Regardless of the roster the result is the same… a hysterical stage show featuring fiercebeats, funkyriffs, tons of electronic& synthesized intervention all the while cranking out so many lyrical chiches that it’s almost a parody on contemporaryrapmusic itself.
Citing influences such as Bel Biv Devoe , George Clinton & Parliament, this hipster hip-hop seeks to become much more than the fleeting and forgettable pop anthems of the Beibers, Ke$has; going above and beyond to call these artists out for being little more than background and hearkening back to the heyday of popdance& R&B music.
In pure DIY fashion, Wallpaper got it’s beginnings by slinging CDR’s of bedroom recordings featuring keyboards, computers & an auto-tuned voice… just for fun during a period of musical downtime. The ability to dive full on into the Ricky Reed personna and bring down a house with ironic motown, new jack swingand soulclassics just made the act all the more palatable.
Since then the band saw much acclaim and warm reception of the first Full Length Doo-Doo Face from Eenie Meenie Records, then began flexing their production skills remixing and mash-up-ing such performers as Das Racist(with the infamous Pizza Hut & Taco Bell song), Passion Pit and just to be appropriately ‘snarky’… even auto-tuned Jay-Z‘s D.O.A. (Death Of Autotune) - all of which you can download from the homepage at http://coolgenius.net/. Only recently did Wallpaper make a high profile stunt/statement in the sale of their Auto-tune racks via Craigslist, inevitably deciding to take the band in a (slightly) more serious direction.
MTVu just began ‘Indie Music March’ celebrating with 31 premieres in 31 days, kicking things off with Wallpaper’s latest video for #STUPiDFACEDD (You will learn that Wallpaper has been known for creating their own language for various party-like situations). Check it out:
It bleeds sleaziness and doesn’t hold back in it’s full-on attack of the ridiculousness that is the party-down counter-culture found at frat parties and the like. The funny part is… Eric is a serious student of music (A Graduate of Berkeley as a matter of fact) so don’t brush it off as some joke. I guarantee that if you dive a little further into the music you can pick up on the notable talent, catchiness and cleverness that is Wallpaper.
