Back in the early 2000's, or whenever, when people still used AOL Instant Messenger for all communication needs, I chose KateTheEmoKid as my screen name. I was in high school, in New Jersey, and bands like Saves the Day and The Get Up Kids really SPOKE to me, with their angst-y lyrics about being bored in the suburbs. Plus it was like 10 points of emo cred if you could come up with a user name with no numbers in it. (numbers were for $ell-outs)
Flashforward a few years to 2006. I'm in college, listening to all sorts of music and going to lots of shows, and I decide to start an account here on a whim, probably because my friends are doing it (peer pressure!) I decide: hell, why not use KateTheEmoKid again? Emo is pretty much over by this point, except for among 13-year-olds who shop at Hot Topic, but it's totally funny, right?
Anyway, I create this account, listen to tons of music…and then later, after I've been employed writing about music for 3 years or something…I decide I need to change this super embarrassing name to something else. After all, I wouldn't want someone to find me on here and then totally mis-judge me based on my username, right? So I try to change it, and fail. It turns out Last FM won't let you do this. So unless I want to delete this account completely and start a new one (thus losing tons of precious listening information that is totally important)…I'm stuck with it. KateTheEmoKid! Officially the oldest emo kid on the planet, now in her mid 20s.
