To start the day off we had a two hour drive from my sisters house in eaton, Ohio to the germain amphitheater in Columbus. After that we had to wait in line, outside in the blistering heat(10:00 and it already felt like a hundred degrees.) for about an hour and a half. once we got in the gate we went strait to get us a free monster.
Second Stage
First band:
Egypt Central
Didn't watch them and honestly don't remember what i was doing.
Second band:
Three Inches of Blood
This was one of the bands i was looking forward to seeing. the vocals can get kinda anoying at times but still a fun band to listen to. there set wasn't bad, nothing special but a fun set none the less.the one bad part is the crowed was still was not yet into the show.
7/10
Third Band:
Nile
This was the band i came to see, not only are they my favorite death metal band but they happen to be one of my favorite bands of any genre. The best thing about nile is they are original, which is not very common in the death metal genre (most are
Cannibal Corpse knock offs)when we noticed nile was playing me and greg practically sprinted and got as close to the front as we could. Nile didn't fail to deliver, they were probably the first band that got the crowed going and for good reason, there set was absolutely brutal.
9/10
Fourth Band:
Ankla
to put it simple, we had no idea who this band was so we were very skeptical to begin with. it didn't help when the lead singer was playing an instrument that looked like a bowl with beeds and many other weird instruments like a glockenspiel among many others. but this band was on a mission and that was to put on a absolutely brutal set and win the crowed over, and it didn't take long.
10/10
Fifth band:
ChthoniC
Pronounced Thon-ic is a symphonic black metal band from Taiwan who has been called the Asian
Black Sabbath due to them basically starting the Taiwanese metal scene. but all that means nothing when your in America because virtually nobody knew who they were. at the beginning of the set there was no crowed reaction to them and it didn't help when there lead singer went on a rant about how the U.N. is afraid of Taiwan (in broken English). but about half way through everything started clicking for the band and they won the crowed over. it turned out to be a very good set.
7/10
Sixth band:
In This Moment
This was the band greg wanted to see simple because he loves lead singers who are chicks and chicks with tattoos even know she sucked at singing. The only highlight of this band is that i got into my first mosh pit and it was fun as hell.
5/10
Seventh band:
Daath
What can i say? this band was mind blowing. they played great, their lead singer had a great stage presence and the crowed loved them. Durring the show there was a constant stream of crowed surfers at least 10 at a time. the one bad part about there set is the fat chick crowed surfing that almost dislocated my shoulder.
10/10
Eight band:
DevilDriver
The crowed absolutely loved this band. they played great, the pits were huge and you could barely watch the band cause there were so many crowed surfers.
9/10
Ninth band:
Behemoth
This band was the biggest disappointment of the day. it wasn't cause cause they played bad, actually they played great but what ever they did the crowed wasn't buying it. I hope to see them again when the crowed is into them.
7/10
Tenth band:
Hatebreed
I saw hatebreed last year at ozzfest on main stage, and to say the least i was unimpressed. but second stage was a different story. they had the crowed at their finger tips. everybody was eather moshing, surfing or headbanging.
9/10
Main Stage
First Band:
Lordi
once again another fourin band cursed to play the first slot on main stage (past years it was
DragonForce and
In Flames) This slot has to be the worst slot all day simply because people are getting something to eat, buying merchandise and the people who are actually watching are just to damn tired to try. lordi played well and their stage show was cool but almost nobody watched.
5/10
Second band:
Static-X
I don't like this band but they played alright.
6/10
Third band:
Lamb of God
boy the crowed went crazy for them. water/beer bottles were flying everywhere. people were ripping up the clumps of dirt and throwing. not to mention a pit that took up a third of the lawn. personally i didn't think they were that great, it sounded like the same song over and over again
6/10
...and finally
ozzy
Ozzy and black sabbath are the reason i am a metal head today but some reason i just didn't like the set. to be honest ozzy's voice kinda annoyed me.but the part that most upset me was zakk wylde. in every single song he got a solo and thin in the middle of the set he got a twenty minute solo. it was kinda like deja vu, like i had seen this solo before. well its cause it was the same twenty minute solo he did durring the
Black Label Society show last yeah, witch was the same solo
Jimi Hendrix did at woodstalk.
