Party season is upon us and what better than pop sensation of the year, Robyn.

For me, she came from nowhere. I started the year not really liking her work and I end it besotted. I speak as an ABBA fan, someone who appreciates pop perfection.

What impresses me most about her songwriting is the storytelling. She creates scenarios and vignettes, examining them from different angles so that, whilst you jump around like a lunatic to the beat, you're also entranced by the tales.

By far the best song from the Body Talk trilogy, all released in quick succession this year, is Call Your Girlfriend, my recommendation of the week. In this, she takes the heartbreak song and turns it on its head, writing from the point of view of the new girlfriend and her kindness and sympathy towards the ex-to-be. There's no animosity, no competitiveness, just a generosity of spirit and understanding as she advises the new boyfriend on how to handle the situation. Both here in Last.fm and in YouTube, people are enjoying analysing the song, admiring the twist.

Tell her not to get upset, second-guessing everything you said and done
And then when she gets upset tell her how you never mean to hurt no one
Then you tell her that the only way her heart will mend is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now but you're still her friend
And then you let her down easy

(Roy Lichtenstein source)

Within the trilogy, Call Your Girlfriend can be compared against Dancing on My Own, where Robyn is the jilted ex. Here, she's angry and upset, feeling sorry for herself, or as ABBA put it, "stupid and small" - One of Us. The story is she's there, bearing witness to her boyfriend move on, knowing it's over. There are two versions of Dancing On My Own, on Parts 1 and 3. Part 1's is harder and more clubby. Part 3's is lighter, focusing more on the lyrics.

I was hard pressed to pick from these albums, to be honest, there are so many great tracks, each release better than the last. An immediate favourite was Time Machine (obvious reasons). I love the DeLorean line. Points for getting that in a song.

Robyn is doing what Madonna used to do, just with less contrived sexual innuendo and more style, though she is a little girl to Madonna's woman. Underlying everything is a basic niceness. Madonna intimidated into submission. Robyn charms.

Love Kills, In My Eyes, Indestructible are party essentials. Coupled with the outstanding lyrics, they're the kind of songs that get people on their feet and singing along. Taking it up a notch are the hardcore trance versions and purpose-built tracks such as We Dance to the Beat, None of Dem (feat. Röyksopp) (with the line "I've got a little girl singing on repeat in my head") and another personal favourite U Should Know Better (Featuring Snoop Dogg), which is a more successful 'don't fuck with me' song than Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do.

At the other end of the scale are the quiet end of the night songs. The intimate Hang With Me (Acoustic), orchestral Indestructible – Acoustic Version and the beautiful Jag vet en dejlig rosa which comes across sweet if not a little shy.

Robyn - you did it right and won me over.

Such an amazing track. I'm hard pressed to think of any other song that takes the perspective of 'the other woman' and turns it into a compassionate one. Robyn is a genius.

Hi O_A, thanks for the comment. Agreed. I was thinking the same thing, couldn't think of one either.

Amazing track (I agree). And a sweet article too (although who knows how anyone gets to find it nowadays - recommended reading has been down for weeks). Nice images too I used to be a huge admirer of Roy Lichtenstein through my teenage years until I started wondering about attribution, How much was the genius of Roy Lichetenstein and how much was the genius of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby?

I've had a girlcrush on Robyn since "Konichiwa Bitches". (See my year-end wrapup journal from last year where I called Lady Gaga "Robyn 2.0". ) She's so amazing. And she's everywhere this year! Yowza. In a just world, she would be a much bigger star.

Thanks for the comments, rwitte and liz. : ) Robyn is in a lot of year end lists - quite rightly so!
