The inimitable Miss Jones returns after 20 years with an astonishing track and video.

A long, long time ago, my favourite track by her was Private Life, a dry , track which perhaps now can be seen as a precursor to with its hypnotic rhythms in both music and lyrics. Decades later, she gives us a cold, disturbing and frightening mix of modern trip-hop with lyrics suggesting misanthropy if not misandry.

The video, directed by Nick Hooker, is an exercise in beautiful, slick, oily black against brilliant white. The sinister animation takes us back to the circus and the Hall of Mirrors. Miss Jones appears distorted, her face contorted in horrible ways and her movements inhuman, jerky and unnatural. The video ends on a vicious snarl. If we weren't surprised by the supra-human Miss Jones, we are by the alien.

The lyrics are fascinating; pure poetry. Perhaps not the nicest poem you've ever read but certainly memorable.

pleased to meet you, pleased to have you on my plate
your meat is sweet to me
your destiny
your fate

you’re my life support, your life is my sport

I’m a man-eating machine X2

you won’t hear me laughing, as I terminate your day
you can’t trace my footsteps, as I walk the other way

I can’t get enough prey, pray for me X2
(I’m a man-eating machine)
corporate cannibal, digital criminal
corporate cannibal, eat you like an animal

employer of the year, grandmaster of fear
my blood flows satanical,
mechanical, masonical and chemical
habitual ritual

I’m a man-eating machine.. X2

I deal in the market, every man, woman and child is a target
a closet full of faceless nameless pay more for less emptiness

I’ll make you scrounge, in my executive lounge
you pay less tax, but I’ll gain more back

my rules, you fools

we can play the money game
greed game, power game, stay insane
lost in the cell, in this hell
slave to the rhythm of the corporate prison

I’m a man-eating machine…
i can’t get enough prey
pray for me
corporate cannibal…
digital criminal…

I’ll consume my consumers, with no sense of humour
I’ll give you a uniform, chloroform
sanitise, homogenise, vapourise… you

I’m the spark, make the world explode
I’m a man-eating machine, I’ll make the world explode
corporate cannibal…

The music takes us directly to Massive Attack, who curated the Meltdown Festival at London's Southbank in June this year where Miss Jones premiered her new material.

This is the standard being set for the forthcoming new album, Hurricane (3 Nov 08), which can be heard at her MySpace. Producers include Sly And Robbie, Wally Badarou, Tricky, and Brian Eno. I was upset to hear Massive Attack had yet again delayed release of their next album to sometime in 2009. Miss Jones will appease me in the meantime. She is on Later... with Jools Holland tonight and this Friday. If you miss it, catch it on the BBC iPlayer where each show will be available for another seven days.

Yes, I wanted to put in my journal how intimidating she is. I watched the longer 'Later... with Jools Holland' last night and she was very funny. She was saying how much she loves jigsaw puzzles, like the 1,000+ pieces ones! She said that's why it took her 19 years to do another album, she was busy playing jigsaw puzzles! lol She came across very well, very likeable and warm. Not like her stage persona at all.
