    It's Christmas this week. It should be all Frosty The Snowman, Jingle Bells or how much we're dreaming of a white Christmas but no. What's the people's choice? "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me." That has to be one of the funniest Christmas number ones ever. I loved this song on its release and am very pleased to see it back in the charts.

    If you Google Rage Against The Machine via Google News UK tonight, you get 4,031 hits. I shall presume readers will have seen at least one of the articles that appear there. There's no reason for me to reproduce the story of joke > Facebook Group > popular > captured imagination > went global > challenged X Factor > first non-X Factor Christmas number one since 2004 > then Simon Cowell offers jobs to the originators > they turn him down.

    Background done, let's ruminate. What does this all mean? Does it mean anything?

    When I join a few dots, I get an interesting picture. I get this people's choice Christmas number one at the end of the same year as the peoples' uprising and revolution in Iran. In Iran, it began as a grassroots movement, then they pointed at Mousavi, "You! You're our new leader. Get up there!" much to his initial surprise. A little over a year ago in the USA, a similar hunger for change and an exceptional orator changed history. All of this from the bottom up. There was no big plan. Just a bunch of people winging it, seeing how far they could take things.

    And that's the thing. For as long as I can remember, it has always been: "What difference can I make on my own against the system?" Once you begin to comprehend the enormity of The System, you balk at the very idea. You could take a potshot, sure, but you wouldn't hope to make much of an impact. If you inspired others to join you, you could rest assured you still wouldn't make much of a difference even if you got noticed, and woebetide if you did.

    And now we have three examples of people who did it. Not unreachable, glamourous people. Just us and people like us.

    To me, this is nothing short of incredible. I never imagined in my lifetime I'd see anything like this. Maybe I'm cynical, but if I am, I learnt early. It's pretty much what we were taught in school: to learn to accept the system, to obey, to make do, find workarounds, lower one's sights, think small, to not believe we'd make any difference no matter how much we sacrificed, and that if we tried, to expect to lose. This is what the novel 1984 was all about.

    It is fitting to end the first decade of the new millenium on something so positive and hopeful. The underlying message in the RATM song is man versus the machine and man refusing to co-operate.

    Can we contemplate an end to The System?

    I think it's lovely to even be in a position to ponder that. After observing citizen journalism during the post-election turmoil in Iran, I saw that there is a need for some aspects of The System. I saw we need professional journalists as much as we do citizen ones. We need the professionals to put their years of training to good use and make sense of events for us, put them into context, give us balanced reportage. Of course, we don't need the parasites who more or less rewrite original copy, we don't need the ones who type with their eyes shut or the spineless ones with no integrity. But there is a definite need for the good ones.

    So if we apply these lessons to music, then we see we do need The System. It can't dissolve entirely. We have a citizen chart hit this week but only because of exceptional circumstances - the idea amused us and to challenge the juggernaut that is reality television and X Factor, both products of this decade. These two things galvanised and inspired us.

    Hold on.

    Haven't we fought ourselves? We made reality television popular. We destroyed the music industry. We killed the CD and decided to be happy with tinny mp3s, and worse, ringtones. So who are we telling to fuck off with this week's number one?

    You know where this thought leads: are we replacing The System?

    As scary a thought as that is, I think it unlikely. What The System provides is the opportunity not to have to think for oneself, to have all the hard work done for you so the select bits can be served up on a plate. The System survives because most people are too lazy or lack the intelligence to think for themselves. Thirdly, some people just don't want things to change and will actively resist any threat.

    So to conclude, as admirable as this week's Christmas number one is, I expect order to be restored for next week and the X Factor winner to enjoy his moment at the start of the new year with whatever his dull offering is. I expect that to continue into the next decade - maybe not the X Factor per se but certainly more disposable pop and rock. We can expect more of the usual foul language in the ever-predictable bid to 'shock' the fuddy duddies (who only exist in pop videos and the pages of The Daily Mail), and more pretend chart battles to make news headlines and keep burgeoning profiles up. If this is depressing, remember: this really is the people's choice. That's who this "expletive-driven tirade" is really aimed at. So it's not so much rage against the machine as much as rage against each other. We seem to have been in a rage about something or other throughout this decade.

    As for the internet and downloading, we're not far from the £1 per album and permission to download for free for personal use only, thereby avoiding ugly, expensive lawsuits that go nowhere.

    The System remains.

    It was going to take something special I had to tell everyone about to get me back into writing these, and this is it.

    TocarMoses is the first single from Elizabeth Fraser in a decade and wouldn't have been released at all if her close friend, Jake Drake-Brockman, hadn't tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in September.

    The song was recorded some time ago with Damon ReeceMassive Attack's drummer, and her partner of more than a decade – and Jake Drake-Brockman.

    Jake was keyboardist with Echo & The Bunnymen as well as with BOM and The Hook ‘Em Boys; he was also a highly respected sound engineer for the BBC.

    Elizabeth Fraser and Damon Reece in a statement said that:

    the passing of such a wonderful man and great friend cannot go unmarked.

    A talented musician, a technical genius/blagger, a jack-of-all-trades and master of many, Jake was a vibrant reminder to us all of what it is to be alive. His lust for life, keen intellect and Dunkirk spirit were a beacon of light in a world that is rapidly fading into mediocrity and convenience. As unique and individual as the classic motorcycles he loved so much, Jake was the last of the Mohicans. The Earth is a duller planet without him.


    All proceeds from the sale are going to Jake's family.



    The Massive Attack influence is unmistakable in the single; trip-hop dub rhythms featuring an Eastern European accordian with archaic choral samples.

    There are two remixes. The first is from Welsh producer Timothy LewisThighpaulsandra project, which expands on the ethnic aspect of the original’s accordians whilst maintaining the tempo and rhythm structure.

    The second is the one I have recommended today, from ex-Alpha Andy Jenks under his spaceland guise. It begins with drama, introducing sparkling bells that lift the melancholy. Overall though, it doesn’t deviate too far from the original. Fraser is upfront and reverbed a little bit more in the mix, this time set in front of a more organic-sounding James Bond, noir backing track.

    I didn't know the background when I found the track by accident in We7. At first I was confused; I thought I'd heard every track Elizabeth Fraser had ever released. Was this another one of those one-offs everyone else knows about before I do?



    Listening, there are subtle signs of maturity, though not markedly so. It seems Elizabeth Fraser is one of those few lucky singers who get to keep their voice intact. The purity is evident in the middle of the Spaceland Remix, in the oohs and aahs that could have easily have been recorded decades ago.

    I will try and find more festive songs that aren't obviously so over the next few weeks. Rest assured, it will be a Slade-free zone. Nothing wrong with a bit of Slade, but Christmas is for grown-ups too, not just those still at school.

  • Favourite Songs 2009 - playlist for a friend

    I've just pulled together two CDs' worth of my favourite songs of 2009 for one of my friends. It's a sampler of this year's hits along with those that I think are influential or directional in some way.

    The list is by no means complete. I stream much more nowadays so I don't actually have a lot of the albums I've enjoyed this year. I didn't even notice until I came to compile this playlist that maybe lack of ownership might be a problem.

    So, the list. My tastes lean towards electronica, rock and folk, less so towards jazz, and I think that's quite well reflected here. Nevertheless, these are all great, great songs.

    Placement - I've arranged them so that each sounds good after the previous track and overall, there's a pattern to the tempo going up and back down. I've also grouped together pop, heavily experimental electronica and quiet folky songs. The whole should lead to an overall pleasurable listening experience.

    This isn't the song I originally wanted to reco this week. The one I wanted to go with is also on this album, the riproaring You Always Stand In My Way, but the video for this one is better.

    For those of us born too late, it's hard to imagine Demis Roussos as the love god he was revered for in the 1970s, but once you see this video, you can begin to understand why Beverly made such a big deal about him at Abigail's Party.

    In the 1970s, Demis Roussos, along with Nana Mouskouri, represented the height of sophistication and good taste. I always found them funny, but sometimes I'm a bit naughty like that. By then, Demis had let himself go and Nana wore odd glasses, both of which kind of spoilt the effect. There was no doubt they could sing, just by then, it was safe, bland and innocuous and they didn't look like all the other pop stars.

    The song in the video, TocarEnd Of The World, is of the safe, bland, innocuous type, heavily disguised as romantic, dramatic progressive rock. It's a love song, a ballad, sung by someone gorgeous, who knows he's gorgeous, and his friends think they're gorgeous too.



    Laughter aside, there's definitely something there. On my first viewing, I was transfixed. That's what Demis looked like?! So which one's Vangelis? He must be the one on keyboards. Trying to go back that far in time and make sense of things was blowing my mind.



    Aphrodite's Child was a supergroup of sorts. It was a Greek band, the only one at the time to make an international impact, led by Demis and included the now legendary Vangelis (Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou) and Lucas Sideras. End Of The World was their debut album and this week's reco was the first track off that. It's a patchy album, but imaginative. Overall, it stands as a good representation of ideas and themes in psychedelic progressive rock across late-60s Europe.

    The band are most famous for their third, final and best album, the cult classic 6 6 6 (1971). My friend davidjennings has written a good blog about it here. Allmusic describes it as, "An amazingly bombastic concept album about the Apocalypse of St. John seen as a rock spectacle. Demis Roussos wails the lyrics in a frantically operatic falsetto, while the band pound fiercely through Vangelis' furiously complex music. It certainly has its moments, but the entire set eventually becomes too overwhelming to sit through. "



    Demis Roussos has come through his awkward years and looks like a venerable, friendly old gentleman now (okay, maybe not in that pic). I'm pleased to discover he's still recording and, moreover, he's still with it and happening and uses social network sites. Here's his MySpace where he's promoting his new album, Love is, released in May this year.

    A rare treat for a rare achievement. Today, Eddie Izzard, one of my favourite comedians, completed his 43rd marathon in almost as many days to help raise money for charity.

    Comedian Eddie Izzard has completed his endurance feat of 43 marathons in 51 days for charity Sport Relief, finishing in London's Trafalgar Square.

    Izzard, who ran at least 27 miles per day and took just one day off per week, covered about 1,100 miles on his route across the UK.

    The 47-year-old, who trained for just five weeks for the event, told BBC News he now planned to "sleep for a week".


    I don't know what kind of music Eddie Izzard likes but I'm hoping he likes northern soul. TocarKeep On Running was a number one hit for The Spencer Davis Group in 1965, when group member Steve Winwood was still a teenager, but the song was written by Jackie Edwards. (see what I did there? Edwards... Eddie...)



    Wilfred Gerald "Jackie" Edwards (1938-1992) was a Jamaican musician and songwriter whose catalogue encompassed , R&B, , , and . The 'Nat King Cole of Jamaica', when Island Records relocated to London in 1962, founder Chris Blackwell persuaded Jackie Edwards to come too. He wrote the first three hits for The Spencer Davis Group and his TocarGet Up inspired The Clash's TocarRevolution Rock. He was to become one of the most influential figures in Northern Soul as well as .

    I went to Trafalgar Square where Eddie Izzard stopped in the cold and pouring rain to do press interviews, sign autographs and allow people to take photos and shake his hand. His exhaustion was unmistakable yet he maintained his good humour. Some people crowded around him, some walked by shouting, "Well done, Eddie!" and others stood sheltered from the rain on top of the steps outside the National Portrait Gallery to watch.

    I followed Eddie Izzard's progress in Twitter all summer, not realising at first he was training for these marathons. I saw he was running day and night around London, posting pics of where he was and what he was looking at. Next thing I knew, he was near Wales and I jokingly asked him if he'd run there.

    Once the penny dropped that he had, I read his messages with awe and admiration. He was up early every day, he told us about his injuries, the lost toenails (with pics, which was awful). He told us how he was feeling and coping. Sometimes he struggled to keep going, other times he distracted himself by finding things to be amused by, such as place names, and he especially enjoyed meeting people who ran with him for a stretch. He posted pics of landmarks and of himself holding the various British flags depending on where he was, the reasoning being "We are different. We are the same."

    I spent the entire time worrying about him.

    Tomorrow is 09.09.09, release day for the remastered Beatles albums.

    Of all the tracks that I want to hear, and there are a fair number, the one I am most excited about is this one, 'Tomorrow Never Knows', which I didn't notice until I was about 17 when a friend put it on a mixtape. To say it took me by surprise is an understatement. I can still remember the shock when it came on, looking at the tracklist to see who it was, then staring at the name, not believing it was The Beatles.

    I was born too late to appreciate The Beatles in the 1960s, so my first awareness came via radio and these great ABC cartoons that used to be shown on children's television in the 1970s. I thought I saw all of them, I don't remember this episode at all. It appeared in the penultimate episode of the third and final series. The premise of the cartoon is:
    The Beatles fall into a well and end up in the inner world with foreign natives. The chief wants the Fabs to marry his daughters, and they began to run away; Ringo loses his singing voice. For treatment, his three mates send Ringo to a haunted house to scare his voice back.

    The title of the song is taken from one of Ringo's many malapropisms. All this time, I thought it was something deep and meaningful and now I find it was a Ringoism.

    The lyrics, however, are deep and meaningful, lifted directly from a book based on The Tibetan Book of the Dead, The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on The Tibetan Book of the Dead, by Timothy Leary, Ralph Metzner and Richard Alpert.
    The understanding from the book was that the "ego death" experienced under the influence of LSD and other psychedelic drugs is essentially similar to the dying process and requires similar guidance.

    'Tomorrow Never Knows' inspired The Chemical Brothers first number one, TocarSetting Sun. They had to get a musicologist to prove they hadn't sampled it.

    Mark Edwards reviewed the remastered albums in this week's Sunday Times. He said:
    What makes the new versions so much better? Crucially, the technology that transfers analogue sound into the digital domain is significantly better than it was 20 years ago, so before the remastering engineers started tweaking anything, they had already got the sound back closer to the original masters than before. Then they used denoising technology and overall limiting. Importantly, the engineers avoided today’s trend to limit the music heavily (limiting squashes the dynamics of music, making the quieter bits seem louder, creating a more even sound, which has more impact on the radio) in favour of a subtle treatment that adds oomph but retains the original dynamics.

    Of 'Tomorrow Never Knows', he says:
    Amazingly, the album’s astonishing closing track, Tomorrow Never Knows, was the first thing they recorded, establishing a palette of backwards guitar, distorted vocals and distinctly un-pop rhythms that complemented a new seriousness in the lyrics (“I know what it’s like to be dead”).

    According to a comment in Amazon reviews, some limiting was used, although "In total, only five minutes of music was subjected to limiting in the entire stereo remastering.".

    The box set will retail at £169.99. Individually, the albums can be bought for £10.99, which means a saving of just over £16. Enough for another album, or pay for the packaging seems to be the choice.

    We will have to wait for the big announcement tomorrow to see if it will be available on Apple's iTunes.

    The xxcreate pared back, skeletally minimal perfect pop songs aching to be covered by powerpop bands such as Girls Aloud, Sugababes or Scissor Sisters. There's an album in the making. Mind you, if they did, would we enjoy the songs as much as we do now?

    My pick this week, Infinity, draws from Chris Isaak's TocarWicked Game and Jimmy Somerville's TocarSmalltown Boy, for those tearing their hair out trying to remember.

    I like 'Infinity' especially for its humour. It's a little bit tongue-in-cheek. He wants her to give in. She's not falling for it. He's coaxing. She's refusing. The whole song is a to-ing and fro-ing between the pair of them which leaves you wondering: did she or didn't she?



    The track is typical of the rest of the album. Whilst the sound is dark, it wouldn't be right to tag them 'melancholic'. There's no sadness here. It's dark as in nighttime, intimacy, romance. It's dark as in whispers and stolen kisses.



    The music is Cocteau Twins ethereal, elegant and sophisticated; the lyrics subtle and clever, all the more seductive for the just-there European accents of lead vocalists Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim. The tempo throughout the album is languid and lazy; all torpor and fatigue; think Mazzy Star. There are no offensive bangs or crashes, nothing to jangle one's nerves. It's smooth without going anywhere near high street generic smooth jazz and its done with a sensibility borrowed from The Cure. In short, it's an exceptional debut and another unusual, original album to be released in this bumper year.

    You get an idea of how powerful their songs would be in a 'normal' format when you hear their cover versions. Their take on Womack & Womack's Teardrops is a triumph and one I prefer to the original. Hot Like Fire was Aaliyah's favourite song and The xx have done her proud. In interview, Romy said, "With a cover you should take the essence of it and completely change the music side of it."

    Like Soap&Skin, who I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, The xx have yet to reach the age of 20 and like Soap&Skin, their music belies their youth.

    This week's track is a delicious example from the kedgiree that is the fifth album from alt-rock Danish band Mew, released this week.

    'Introducing Palace Players' begins with slightly stiff proggy math-rock, soaring dangerously into Dad Rock territory via dream pop. It is at once both cheerful and cheesy but at no point is it disposable.

    The video, directed by Martin De Thurah, Adam Hashemi & Lasse Martinussen, is in keeping with this spirit of accessible inaccessible, giving us scenic visuals of alien activity in the heart of a peaceful countryside. There's no discernible deep meaning, as there isn't anywhere else in the album.



    The full title of the album is a poem:

    No more stories
    Are told today
    I'm sorry
    They washed away

    No more stories
    The world is grey
    I'm tired
    Let's wash away


    'No More Stories...' is an experimental album, taking elements from seemingly disparate genres and putting them together to see what happens. The result is art rock disguised as glorious pop, all upbeat, summery loveliness. What we are to admire is the detail and how it all works together.



    Think of it as musical embroidery: delicate elements contrasted against the weightier; the surprising heaviness of masses of tiny beads and sequins and the strength of fine fabric that supports them; silk and feathers on leather. The album is so pleasing to the ear, some people are already sneering at them for 'appealing to the mainstream'. Usually the sign of a good album, is that. This one is not far from a 5/5.

    The highlight of the album is TocarCartoons And Macramé Wounds (track 7, always the best). The layered ethereal vocals are all Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas set against shimmering guitars and grounded with rock. Half way through its seven-minute length, it swerves back to 70s progginess which the band are clearly at home with and here adds another dimension to the dream.



    Quiet to loud rock, sparkly dream pop, proggy post-rock and gossamer guitars. Written down, it doesn't sound like everything will go together, but neither do leftovers that make up a kedgiree.

    In the last couple of days, I have had less than four hours sleep. I can't tell you how good this sounds and feels, jangling on my nerves and reminding me of nightmares.

    The Guardian describes Soap&Skin as ambient music for torture chambers and it's not hard to see why. Listen carefully, and you hear screams rending behind unsettling and jarring melodies and rhythms.



    Soap&Skin is nineteen year old Austrian artist, Anja Plaschg currently living in Vienna. She is classically trained in piano and violin and learnt basic sound programming on the computer from her brother. Lovetune for Vacuum is her debut album, released in April this year.



    TocarDDMMYYYY is an instrumental electronic track that's more percussive than ethereal, bringing to mind artists such as Aphex Twin. Beginning with drums, it is largely repetitive and instead of building to a crescendo, it introduces distressed vocals in the background, which close the track with horrified screams.

    This track is an unusual one for her. Normally, her music is piano-led with lyrics being part-sung and part expressed. The last track on the album, which comes straight after this one, TocarBrother of Sleep, sits at the other extreme: soothing, gentle, "I dreamed of you / every day / every night" which in repetition sometimes sounds like "fairy tales / very nice". The second half of the piece is lost in a haze of drone and birdsong.



    Sleep, nightmares, horror, terror, death, the drama of the macabre are all themes explored in the album. Her style recalls artists such as Julee Cruise for Angelo Badalamenti in the Twin Peaks soundtrack, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins (Elizabeth Fraser), Scott Walker in Drift, Joan Wasser, and Björk of course, but I'm casting around for an anchor. This is the kind of music that's more of an art piece than a pop album. Not being able to pin her down and struggling to find an exact niche is a disconcerting exercise that remains with you throughout the album.

    Anja Plaschg has contributed to two Austrian films: the horror sequel Dead In Three Days 2 [ trailer ] and the adult FILM IST. a girl & a gun (Film is: a girl and a gun).

    'Lovetune For Vacuum' is an album rich with imagination and childish fears that never leave us, that only become more disturbed and distorted as we get older. Don't tag this 'goth', it's much more than that.

    If you don't have The Stone Roses eponymous debut album, you should get it. I have had this album since 1989 or 1990 and hand on heart, I don't think I could live without it. When my first copy was stolen, I went out and bought another one. Didn't even think twice.



    It has been hard to pick one track from the album, so I've decided to go for the track that isn't on the original but a lot of people think is. "Fools Gold/What the World Is Waiting For" is a double A-side which reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart in November 1989. It has been re-released this year as part of the 20th Anniversary celebration and appears in its full length 9:53mins on the remastered edition.

    1989 was the year we started seeing unmistakeable signs of another recession. An extended summer of love it may have been but I distinctly remember job uncertainty and worrying for my future. The 'selfish' 80s were giving way to the 'caring sharing' 90s, and rave/dance culture formed the transition.

    I did a journal on this era last year when I wrote about D-Mob - We Call It Acieed a year ago this week! Well there we are, another anniversary.

    By 1989, I wasn't listening to indie anymore. That had fallen off my radar some years before with the demise of The Smiths. I can't honestly say where I heard any tracks by The Stone Roses, I was rarely home to watch TV. I do remember when I first noticed the name.

    It was in Manchester, a few years earlier. They had spray-painted their name all over the city buildings in town centre. I would see the name and wonder what it meant. 'Roses made of stone?' That was their self-promotion; they got their name noticed without explaining who they were. I saw the graffiti for years until I didn't see it anymore, the words becoming part of the soot-covered Portland Stone-clad buildings that once had been near white before pollution became ingrained. All cleaned up now, of course, but back then, I wondered if the Industrial Revolution was over yet.

    Living in London and feeling a little homesick, coming across The Stone Roses again couldn't have been more welcome. That they sounded like the dancey rave music I was into was great but what was better was that unmistakable sound of Manchester, of home. The shimmering guitars of The Smiths, the local accents, the needs-must creativity. Alongside that was the distinct musical references to the 60s, something else I love.

    Like other great albums, the music transcends time and place. Although there are elements that date it, overall, it is strong enough to stand on its own. For me, the music always promised escape; escape from the daily grind, escape from the city, from problems and worries. The feel is positive, cheerful and upbeat. You can't listen and sit still. If you're not singing your air guitar, you're on your feet dancing like a Mancunian as exemplified by Ian Brown.



    And over and above all the talk and all the chatter of tastemakers is this: the music is just plain, old-fashioned good fun, not to mention gorgeous.
