Tool Live

Thu 23 Aug – Tool, Russian Circles

Russian Circles were a decent warm up act for Tool. They were purely instrumental and sounded like a hybrid of Tool and the Mars Volta. The style was progressive space jazz, the musicians were competent, but I won't be rushing out to buy their album.

I'm sorry if I upset any Russian Circles fans but Tool were the reason I was there!

Maynard came on stage dressed in a favoured cowboy hat and biker jacket but the cowboy hat soon came off to reveal a spiky Mohawk. He resembled a demon with the way he danced at the at the back of the stage (for all the fellow Tori Amos fans I couldn't help but think of a line from her 'devils and gods, they are you and I') - and there was a gong at the back of the stage but I don't think it was used (correct me if I'm wrong).

Tool are the only band I've seen where the set passes without me feeling bored. Every song is a journey and this is more evident in the live performance.

Maybe seeing Tool twice within nine months wasn't the best way to appreciate them live but I wouldn't pass up the chance to see them. I can't help but compare it to their last gig at the M.E.N. arena which I honestly thought was better - but maybe because it's a larger venue and it was the first time I saw them.

The lighting rigs resembled flying saucers and there was an abduction style light show but this time it was mainly fluorescent purple lasers until it culminated in green criss crossing lasers that were like a huge green fish-net stocking stretched above the crowd.

Best of the 10,000 days dominated set list were the songs 46 & 2, Vicarious, and they finished with Aenema.
