The Outsider

Set 22 2006, 3h36

The Outsider couldn't have been a more appropriate title. It is exactly how it makes any "true" DJ Shadow fan feel. Shadow has always been to hip-hop what Fat Boy Slim was to dance. He took you to new places by digging into the past. Most of this new album sounds like a Lil' John knockoff. It not like the songs would even be better if he just stripped out the rappers. Their just bland. Okay I have to admit the Intro taunted by like not other and Artifact was indeed an excellent track but I have come to expect much more from Shadow; a true hero to music junkies everywhere.

The second track on the album kinda sums it up really - This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way). In my view that track is basically a big 'screw you' to those that expect him to produce a certain kind of sound. He's definitely experimenting with some different stuff on the Outsider and in my view it's mostly damn good - Seein Thangs in particular is as good as any track he's ever produced.

One of the problem with Endtroducing being so good was that it's created a legion of so-called true fans who want him to produce one style of music and won't give the time of day to anything other than that.
