Yo La Tengo/Fiery Furnaces

Thu 19 Jul – Yo La Tengo, The Fiery Furnaces

Fiery Furnaces - This is one of those bands that I really feel like I should love but I just didn't feel it. They started out interesting enough and I loved the two drummer setup but in the end they just didn't do it for me. Most of the songs sounded exactly the same

Yo La Tengo - I have had these 'guys' on my want-to-see list for a long time (since 1993's Painful) and they didn't dissapoint. I was kind of worried that they wouldn't play a lot of older stuff because their sound has somewhat evolved (a la Sonic Youth) but they managed to include all of my favorite newer songs, many of my favorite older songs, and only a couple of the newer songs that I don't care for as much.

An excellent experience overall and it leaves me really excited to see another band on my want-to-see list, Built To Spill, in two days.

The Fiery Furnaces were pretty terrible. I expected them to be at least halfway interesting, but they were a total letdown.

Yo La Tengo were great, though. It was great to hear Big Day Coming, Tom Courtenay, and Autumn Sweater. They had so much energy and were so great live. I got to talk to James McNew for a second after the show and he was really cool.

I couldn't believe the idiots in the crowd that were leaving during the middle of the set. My guess is that half the people had never heard of Yo la Tengo and just wanted to go to a free show. Oh well.

I'll be at Built to Spill as well. I saw them in '03, and am excited to hear stuff from You in Reverse live.

I unfortunately got there late (person I went with couldn't leave until later), and we just missed The Fiery Furnaces. I'm admittedly a fan and have seen them twice previously (both times were fantastic, it was seeing them live the first time that got me into them in the first place!), wish I would have caught their set so I could know if it was an off night or something. Some bands just don't lend themselves to the outdoor festival type of setting I suppose, but everyone can have an off night too.

I only have 'I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One' by Yo La, so I was very happy to hear 'Autumn Sweater'. Even though I didn't recognize the entire rest of the show, I still quite enjoyed it (the person I was wish sure wasn't seeming to, though they pretended to later. Guess that's why you don't take people who don't know who the bands are to shows!). I had no idea they all played so many instruments, it was quite impressive just to see how good they all were at essentially anything they did.

I'll also be at Built to Spill tomorrow (unless it's sold out, as I don't have tickets yet!) It will be my first time seeing them too, so I really look forward to that!
