This journal should remind which albums I really liked in 2013. Because of my huge music collection it's impossible to remember them all and I like to have my 60 favorites up on this blog. The order of this list doesn't matter at the moment, I am just collecting my favorites so far and maybe at the end of the year I will sort them which my number one album is.
So let's start:
Progressive Metal how it should be. Leprous definitily understand how to do it. While I am listening to these great guys, I am wondering myself why I never heard of them before this album came out. Maybe its because of the voice of the singer, because it needs time getting used to it, especially when he sings in a really high pitched voice. The songs are mostly over five minutes long and they ignore the normal standard song structure Verse / Refrain / Verse / Refrain / Bridge / Refrain like you know it. So if you consider yourself a Progressive Metal fan, then you will have your fun with these guys. Almost every song can be considered as allusive tip, but my favorite is Contaimnate Me.
- The Few and the Far Between
Once again a solid release from these guys. After I listened to the two first songs, I thought that this CD doesn't have anything special to it, but the more I listened to the whole record the more I liked the other nine songs. I don't know how they do it, but their mix of metalcore, chaotic hardcore and southern rock is immense and I really like it because I only know of a handful more bands who make such a similar sound. So this album has a high chance to get into my top ten this year.
- One One One
How could I forget this amazing album with this fresh sound full of energy between Jazz and experimental / black metal? Good thing that I am listening to their previous album Blackjazz
which was also one of those high power albums, otherwise I would have forgotten about this amazing CD. It's hard these days finding a band with a unique sound, but these guys should get the avant-garde metal
tag because I never heard anything like this at least not so often, the only band I know who did something like that were Yakuza
but they changed their style way too much. So what can I say more? Listen for yourself, you might like it and headbang to the sound of One One One.
4. The Dillinger Escape Plan
- One of Us Is the Killer
5. Stray from the Path
This band is fucking rats. Everytime they anounce a new album, it seems to me that they top their own previous output once again. Their album Anonymous has only awesome tracks. When I heard their first single Badge & A Bullet
I already knew that they would release an album which could be easily one of the best of their genre in this year. They didn't lose any traits which they are known for, you get your dosis of chaotic hardcore like you are used to it. I think I heard a feature on one of their tracks and one track wasn't as good as all the others, but hey tell me an album which you loved from the beginning until the end and I will reconsider my opinion. Anyways its getting clear, which albums will be in my top ten and this one has a high chance to be one of them.
- Abandon All Life
- Monolithe IV
8. Shaded Enmity
- Forsaken and Forgotten
A Melodic Death Metal album, and it can be considered as the best Melodic Death Metal release this year. They combine old school Melodic Death Metal with newer Melo Death, but don't get me wrong, these guys know how to handle their instruments and the singer doesn't give a shit if you like clean vocals or not, because you don't get to hear any clean vox. Support these guys, because they have started a kickstarter campaign and really need your help to get physical copies of their new album which is only available as digital download so far.
To me it seems like they release a new album or ep with every passing year, although their last album is three years ago. Therefore Celeste gives us a double CD as waiting gift. They are not the first band to put out a double CD, but if their concept works out (looks like it) their second CD will be as good as the first one, which gives this album a high chance for one of the 10 ten records this year.
10. After the Burial
- Wolves Within
