If you are an Amon Amarth fan and looking for more music similar to them, this is not the place. They are far closer to death metal and melodic death metal than viking metal. With the exception of a few, like Thryfing, you won't find much in the vein of Amon Amarth here.

Pagan metal is stuff like Аркона and Butterfly Temple. Generally classifiable as folk metal as well, often using black metal elements, but focusing on themes of traditional paganism. Use of instruments like flutes are common. Viking metal IS a genre and is NOT defined only by lyrics - hence Amon Amarth NOT being viking metal. The sound developed from Bathory's Hammerheart and refined on the Nordland albums - THAT is viking metal. It has a specific sound (unclassifiable as anything else - you tell me what genre Nordland is if not VM) and of course the predominant "viking" theme - focusing on viking times, myths, Norse mythology, viking imagery, etc. Einherjer typifies the Viking metal sound. You want to know what viking metal is, listen to them. Best example. VM does not necessarily have folk elements. Pagan metal that lacking in folk elements (very rare) would then be defined as Pagan Black metal, or whatever.
