pink floyd is just one of dozens of genius progrock bands which emerged by the end of the 1960s and beginning of 1970s. pink floyd happens to be a lot more accessible than most progrock which is a lot more experimental.

well.. it's a good start that both prog and alt rock are not 100% defined. how many instrumental parts make a song prog? or is this not only about instrumental parts? there is non-prog rock that has instrumental parts every now and then that would make you think of prog but they are commonly seen as not-prog (by proggers). i think everyone knows examples here (kula shaker mix poprock with indian influences, noir desir have a 20 minute song, the beatles added a musique-concrete piece to their white album). there is also the opposite, commonly-seen-as-prog-bands that have very little prog in their music but only the elitists scream about it. anyways, one could this striving for more complex music as a new sub-genre for prog (oh no, another one) progressive alt rock or as a german prog magazine calls them "modern art rock". keep also in mind that progressive rock is not really a genre by itself but rather an attitude towards creating music. you can use it in most music (- jazz classic).

Has anyone noticed that all the bands we question on if they are prog or not are alternative rock bands? I think this genre has been getting steadily closer to prog rock over time. If you look at the biggest 'alt' rock bands most recent albums, you will find many of them have some form of prog in them. For example Coldplay are having a lot of instrumentals in the middle of their songs that take up a fair amount of the overall song time, Snow Patrol have a 16 minute song in their most recent album, Muse have a 3 part-11 minute song that many people compare with symphonic rock and we have debated Radiohead being prog or not for donkeys years. It could be that in the same way psychedelic rock evolved into prog rock, alt rock is starting to change into a new form of prog rock. I could be very wrong, but even so I want to be told why I am wrong. If I am right however, we could just maybe be seeing the rebirth of prog rock music in the popular music scene in the form of a alt/prog hybrid!
