Well, post-rock grew on progressive music, but in the 90s it became independent style of music. So, Russian Circles don't fit here perfectly. However, they're FANTASTIC and I recommend it for everybody aswell.

The 'progressive' sound seems to be gaining a lot of ground in the past couple years. It seems to be making a presence in more and more mainstream rock. IMO you can thank the internet for that. The way I see it, is that the 'real' music enthusiast enjoys music that is more compelling, more artistic, and more creative than your typical verse-chorus-verse pop rock band. Music is spreading like wildfire and radio is becoming the least dominate source. Those who enjoy music that has staying power are taking over once again (i.e. 70's era). We are the middle men. Let us tell the labels what hot, not vice-verse. Here are a couple of my favorites that fit the 'Progressive' mold: 1. the host - 2 free downloads 2. Russian Circles - instrumentalists 3. Mr. Gnome - 2 piece with an amazing drummer Is there ever a reason to fit into any musical category 100%, or is it better to be more diverse with a little of this and that?

I would say that Tool is more avant-garde than progressive. Still, they've something progressive in their music.

I think it is fair to consider Muse and Tool progressive bands, especially Tool. I mean, Tool obviously fits more in the progressive metal fold, but it still has a place here. As for Muse, I know it is controversial. In the end, honestly, who cares? I consider Muse prog, and I know others will disagree with me. But, just because they disagree doesn't mean people have to flip out. When you think about it, whether or not Muse is prog doesn't determine how many will die in Iraq, doesn't put food on the dinner table and it doesn't help you find a job with good health care. Let's get angry about those things, not Muse.

Does saying that Muse isn't progressive equals hating Muse? Geez, fanboys, chill out, nobody's gonna attack your precious beloved band. For example - I adore Led Zeppelin, but I can't figure out, why the hell it's here, tagged as "progressive rock". DimaTemptation - we already know, that you can't live without screaming around that Muse owns the rest of music, but imagine that other people don't have to think this way. Peace.

As someone who enjoys Muse well enough, Muse isn't progressive rock. They can be appropriately termed as a rock band, perhaps alternative (because it is so dreadfully bad to label them mainstream, correct?). Progressive? Only in the vaguest sense of the word, I believe no one worth his salt in musical intellect would label them as such.
